Phillies released LHP Sean Burnett.

Burnett requested his release after evidently being told he wasn't going to crack the Opening Day roster. The veteran southpaw held a 2.00 ERA this spring, although he didn't record a single strikeout over nine innings. Burnett should be able to find another job quickly, but he might have to spend some time in the minors.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Sunday that he remains hopeful of Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) playing some first base this spring, but he conceded that they may run out of time.

Ramirez's throwing has been limited this spring by a sore shoulder. He's been playing catch for a few weeks without any apparent issues but has yet to test things out in a game. It's not a huge concern given that he's slated to see most of his at-bats in the designated hitter spot this season, but the Red Sox might not be able to play Ramirez at first base against lefties initially as they had planned.

Adam Warren is expected to open the season in the Yankees' bullpen.

Warren has been competing for one of the final two spots in the rotation, but he didn't pitch well Saturday and the Yanks appear to prefer him in a swingman capacity. It looks to be down to Bryan Mitchell, Luis Severino, Chad Green and Jordan Montgomery for the Bombers' last two rotation spots.

Nationals re-assigned INF Brandon Snyder to minor league camp.

Snyder has posted an .854 OPS in Grapefruit League play, but it wasn't enough to land a bench spot. He'll provide minor league depth.
Mar 26 - 9:43 AM

Steven Matz will not make his next scheduled Grapefruit League start due to irritation in his left elbow.

The Mets are adamant that Matz doesn't have anything structurally wrong, but general manager Sandy Alderson admitted that "it's worrisome that he continues to be injured." Matz had surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow last October and also had Tommy John surgery a few years back. The left-hander won't undergo an MRI, but he'll be backed off for a few days before being re-evaluated. Even if Matz progresses well over the next week, a disabled list stint would seem to be a distinct possibility. It would free up a spot in the Mets' rotation for Seth Lugo.

Tyler Duffey is expected to open the season as the Twins' fifth starter.

The Twins thinned out the competition when they optioned out Jose Berrios, and Duffey has won a spot by pitching really well of late. He's allowed just one earned run over his last 16 spring innings, which includes a minor league game Saturday when he struck out 10 while yielding one unearned run across six frames. In all likelihood, Duffey is just keeping a rotation spot warm until Berrios is deemed ready.

Twins optioned RHP Jose Berrios to Triple-A Rochester.

Berrios looked like the clear favorite for the fifth spot in the rotation after Trevor May (elbow) went down, but he fell behind others in part because he was away for the World Baseball Classic. That's the way the Twins are spinning it, anyway. The 22-year-old held an ugly 8.02 ERA in 14 starts with Minnesota last season and will work on building up his stamina at Rochester. He'll get a shot with the big club soon enough.
Mar 26 - 9:29 AM

Tigers optioned C John Hicks to Triple-A Toledo; re-assigned OF Anthony Gose, RHPs Ruben Alaniz, Joe Jimenez, Logan Kensing, Arcenio Leon, Edward Mujica and 1B Dominic Ficiciello to minor league camp.

There aren't any surprise cuts in this group. Hicks didn't have a shot at a roster spot as long as James McCann and Alex Avila were healthy.
