Brett Gardner went 3-for-5 and hit his 11th and 12th homers Monday against the Rangers.

Gardner homered in consecutive at-bats off Yu Darvish, which is a pretty impressive feat. He's up to 12 homers this year, which is four more than he had ever hit before. Oddly, he has just 13 doubles after hitting 33 last year. Still, it's quite a season that he's having.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cubs have "rebuffed inquiries" from the Yankees and others for Justin Ruggiano.

Heyman says the Cubs plan to hang on to both Ruggiano and Chris Coghlan, as they value their bats next year more than the second-tier prospect that they'd receive in return. Both Ruggiano and Coghland are under team control through 2016.

Derek Jeter went 3-for-4 on Monday to pass Carl Yastrzemski for seventh place all-time on the hits list.

Jeter finished tonight's game with 3,420 hits, officially leaving him 10 shy of Honus Wagner in sixth place at 3,430 (Baseball-reference has Wagner at 3,420, which is probably more accurate, but MLB uses Elias for its stats). Jeter also walked and stole a base tonight, making this one of his best games of the season (especially since he was facing Yu Darvish). It's his fifth three-hit game of the year.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Emilio Bonifacio is "drawing interest."

It makes sense, as Bonifacio isn't part of the Cubs' long-term plans and he could be valuable on a contending team as a utility player. The speedster is batting .271/.312/.353 with 14 steals over 68 games this season. Heyman says that the Cubs also figure to shop left-handed relievers James Russell and Wesley Wright.

Melky Cabrera launched a pair of homers and drove in five runs as the Blue Jays smoked the Red Sox 14-1 on Monday.

Cabrera had a two-run homer off Clay Buchholz in the first and a three-run shot of Felix Doubront in the sixth for his third career two-homer game and fifth career five-RBI game. His last time accomplishing both feats was July 3, 2011, when he still played for the Royals.

R.A. Dickey fanned 10 while allowing one run and three hits in seven innings Monday versus the Red Sox.

Dickey had the good knuckler going tonight, striking out 10 for the first time since May 14, 2013 against the Giants. He's 3-0 with a 2.79 ERA against the Red Sox this year, compared to 6-10 with a 4.08 ERA versus everyone else.

Clay Buchholz surrendered seven runs in five-plus innings Monday in a loss to the Blue Jays.

Another clear step backwards for Buchholz. He seemed to have things headed in the right direction earlier this month, but his three starts since the break have gotten progressively worse. He's even a hard guy to use in AL-only leagues now.
Jul 28 - 11:08 PM

Mopping up after Clay Buchholz was pulled, Felix Doubront gave up six runs while getting just two outs in the sixth inning Monday against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox brought Doubront in with the idea that he'd pitch at least a couple of innings and maybe even finish the game. Instead, he gave up six hits and two walks to the 10 batters he faced, throwing 36 pitches in the inning. It's possible that it was his last outing with Boston, as he'd like a trade if he's not going to be a starter, but it's quite a bit more likely that he sticks around and gets another chance to start later this year.
