Gio Gonzalez struggled at times in Saturday's loss to the Reds, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The Reds smacked Gonzalez in the mouth early with a two-run homer by Joey Votto in the third, then drove the starter out of the game with another two runs in the sixth inning. Gonzalez struck out six and walked two. We like him better than his 4.73 ERA and 1.53 WHIP, but he has yet to put together any sort of consistent stretch. He'll try to work toward that end in a home start against the Cubs next Thursday.
May 30 - 7:40 PM

Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 with two solo homers in Saturday's 9-5 win over the Mets.

Stanton cranked his first homer in the third inning, off of Jonathan Niese, then hit another bomb in the ninth inning. With the big game, the slugger is now hitting .232/.326/.524 with 15 homers and 44 RBI. The power numbers are outstanding, obviously, but the average still has room to rise, as Stanton is a career .267 hitter.
May 30 - 7:39 PM

Ruben Tejada went 2-for-4 with three RBI in Saturday's loss to the Marlins.

Tejada stepped up against Tom Koehler in the fourth with the bases loaded. He proceeded to unload them, doubling to center to tie the game at 5-5. The Mets wouldn't find much traction moving forward, though, ultimately losing 9-5 to the Marlins. Tejada is hitting .245/.344/.377 with a homer and seven RBI over 53 at-bats this season and isn't a relevant fantasy piece.
May 30 - 7:32 PM

Tom Koehler struggled mightily in Saturday's win over the Mets, allowing five runs on seven hits over just 3 1/3 innings.

Koehler was given a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, but that didn't last. He served up a pair of singles to start the inning before things really unraveled. The key blow was a bases-clearing double by Ruben Tejada which tied the game at 5-5. Koehler found himself watching from the dugout shortly thereafter. He struck out one and walked four in the contest. The 28-year-old right-hander is currently pitching in the place of Jarred Cosart (vertigo) and holds a 4.01 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 39/25 K/BB ratio over 58 1/3 innings. A road start against the Rockies is up next on the docket.
May 30 - 7:26 PM

Jonathan Niese struggled in Saturday's loss to the Marlins, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits over four innings.

Niese struck out three without walking a batter. After serving up a two-run double to Donovan Solano in the second inning, he surrendered a long solo home run to Giancarlo Stanton in the third and a slightly less majestic two-run shot to J.T. Realmuto in the fourth. The poor start was nothing new for Niese, who has now given up 23 runs in his last 20 innings. He'll take a 4.42 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 37/17 K/BB over 57 innings into his next start, a road outing against the Diamondbacks next Friday.
May 30 - 7:24 PM

Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBI in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Brewers.

Goldschmidt more or less ruined Brewer starter Kyle Lohse's life, hitting a solo homer in the third inning before cranking a monster three-run shot in the fourth that went approximately 433 feet. He's now hitting .345/.448/.661 with 14 homers and 42 RBI. The numbers speak for themselves.
May 30 - 7:21 PM

Jean Segura went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in Saturday's loss to the Diamondbacks.

Segura was the only Brewer player to pick up more than one hit in the 7-3 loss. He's fresh off the disabled list, having recovered from a fractured right pinkie finger, and in his two games back he's gone 3-for-8 with a double. Not too shabby. Segura's hitting .269/.310/.381 over 134 at-bats, the bulk of which came before the May 13 injury.
May 30 - 7:16 PM

Adam Jones was diagnosed with a mild ankle sprain.

His X-rays came back negative. Jones missed only his sixth game in the last four seasons Saturday against the Rays. The four-time All-Star is day-to-day.
