Nationals manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday morning that Ryan Madson is having a problem with a finger on his throwing hand.

It sounds like it's more serious than a blister. "We're analyzing it now," Baker told reporters ahead of Wednesday afternoon's series finale against the visiting Angels. Madson, acquired from the Athletics on July 16, has worked nine scoreless innings for Washington.

Nationals transferred SS Trea Turner from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

This is nothing more than a paperwork move to clear a 40-man roster spot for outfielder Alejandro De Aza. Turner took on-field batting practice Tuesday for the first time since fracturing his right wrist in late June. He won't be ready for activation for at least another couple of weeks.

Eric Thames is not in the Brewers' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Pirates.

Jesus Aguilar will play first base and hit fifth versus right-hander Gerrit Cole. Thames went 0-for-4 on Tuesday night and is batting just .196 so far in August.

Ryan Braun is getting the day off Wednesday afternoon against the Pirates.

This appears to a routine breather for the veteran outfielder. Hernan Perez will start in left field and bat seventh versus Pittsburgh right-hander Gerrit Cole.

Orlando Arcia (back) remains out of the Brewers' starting lineup on Wednesday afternoon.

Arcia was scratched from Tuesday's lineup due to back spasms and he will take another day of rest. Eric Sogard is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff against Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole.

Andrew Heaney (elbow) is scheduled to make his season debut Friday in Baltimore.

Heaney got the go-ahead after throwing a bullpen session in front of Angels coaches and trainers on Tuesday at Nationals Park. The 26-year-old left-hander is nearly 14 months removed from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery and posted a promising 2.60 ERA and 29/5 K/BB ratio over 27 2/3 innings on his six-start minor league rehab assignment. He's looking like a potential fantasy sleeper for the stretch run.

Nationals purchased the contract of OF Alejandro De Aza from Triple-A Syracuse.

De Aza will give Washington some much-needed outfield depth. The 33-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Nationals in June and was batting .280/.368/.403 with four home runs and two stolen bases in 56 games at Syracuse.
Aug 16 - 10:50 AM

Nationals placed OF Brian Goodwin on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 14, with a left groin strain.

The injury comes with bad timing for Goodwin, who had been drawing regular starts in the Nationals' outfield. He owns a cool .811 OPS with 13 home runs and six stolen bases in 74 games this season. Alejandro De Aza has been called up from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding 25-man roster move.
