Red Sox manager John Farrell said that Koji Uehara is "not likely" to be ready for Opening Day after feeling more discomfort in his left hamstring during a bullpen session Saturday.

It's not clear at this point how long he might be sidelined, but the veteran reliever has dealt with the hamstring ailment for nearly two weeks now and doesn't seem to be getting much better. Edward Mujica will be the primary closer for the Red Sox until Uehara is ready, although Farrell wouldn't rule out using Junichi Tazawa, Tommy Layne and Alexi Ogando should the matchups present themselves.

Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) will take batting practice on Sunday.

Zimmerman banged up his left shoulder on a diving attempt Saturday, but there appears to be no concern, as he's expected back in the lineup Monday. The Nationals can't afford any more injuries to their regulars.

Nationals manager Matt Williams admitted Sunday that Jayson Werth (shoulder) being ready for Opening Day would be "a stretch."

It comes as no surprise after Williams revealed recently that Werth still experiences some soreness in his surgically-repaired right shoulder when he tries to hit. The outfielder did have a good session of batting practice Saturday but isn't quite ready for game action yet and is simply running out of time. Werth seems likely to be ready around mid-April if he can avoid setbacks. Tyler Moore should see most of the at-bats in left field until Werth returns.

Yankees re-signed RHP Jared Burton to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Burton was just released on Thursday but is now back in camp. It's an unusual occurrence, but it's not a surprise that Burton didn't take long to find work -- even if it's at the same place he had been. The veteran reliever has been dealing with a strained lat but played catch on Sunday. He's likely to make the team but begin the season on the disabled list.

Didi Gregorius (wrist) said he felt much better Sunday.

Gregorius injured his left wrist when he dove for a ball during Saturday's game. He'll rest for three days but believes he'll be fine come Opening Day. Gregorius is slated to be the Yankees' primary shortstop.

Braves released LHP James Russell.

By releasing him now, the Braves will only have to pay Russell $606,000 of the $2.425 million he's owed. Still, it's a surprising decision given how steady the southpaw has been the last few seasons. Russell posted a 2.97 ERA and a 42/20 K/BB ratio over 57 2/3 innings while pitching out of the bullpen for the Cubs and Braves. The 29-year-old will catch on elsewhere in short order.

Astros optioned C Max Stassi to Triple-A Fresno; re-assigned SS Carlos Correa, LHP Darin Downs, C Tyler Heineman, RHP James Hoyt and INF Gregorio Petit to minor league camp.

Correa is the biggest name here, but it's obviously no surprise that the top prospect didn't crack the Opening Day roster. He'll begin the season at Double-A and could possibly push to debut before the end of 2015.
Mar 29 - 8:36 AM

Astros optioned RHP Jake Buchanan to Triple-A Fresno.

He posted a 5.40 ERA over 8 1/3 innings this spring. Buchanan will be part of Fresno's rotation.
