Mike Trout is not in the Angels' lineup Tuesday.
Trout tweaked his left wrist Sunday afternoon on a diving catch, though he also went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI in that same game. It's obviously not a serious issue. Daniel Robertson will start in center field Tuesday night against the Astros.
Henderson Alvarez is undergoing shoulder surgery.
Alvarez was examined this week by Dr. James Andrews, who apparently recommended the shoulder procedure. The 25-year-old right-hander was limited to just four starts this season because of what was originally labeled shoulder inflammation. It's not clear if he'll be ready by next spring. Shoulders are often trickier than elbows.
Cole Hamels' next start has been pushed to Friday.
Hamels is scheduled to start Thursday, but the Phillies obviously don't want to use him one day before the July 31 trade deadline. His start Friday will likely be in a different uniform. The left-hander threw a no-hitter against the Cubs on Saturday afternoon.
According to Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post, the Nationals are nearing a deal for Jonathan Papelbon.
Papelbon has said that he won't waive his no-trade clause unless he gets to remain a closer, so he's presumably going to push Drew Storen out of the ninth-inning role in Washington. Papelbon, who's making $13 million this year and carries a $13 million vesting option for 2016, owns a sparkling 1.59 ERA and 40/8 K/BB ratio through 39 1/3 innings this season.
Angels recalled INF/OF Efren Navarro from Triple-A Salt Lake.
As expected, Navarro will replace Matt Joyce (concussion) on the active roster. The 29-year-old is batting .260/.306/.312 in 82 plate appearances this season and will serve as a left-handed bat off the bench.
Marlon Byrd is not in the Reds' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Cardinals.
It's just a day of maintenance for the veteran outfielder. Jason Bourgeois is starting in left field and batting leadoff for the Reds on Tuesday at Busch Stadium.
Angels optioned INF Kyle Kubitza to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Kubitza was called up after David Freese's finger injury last week, but the team has since acquired Conor Gillaspie, who should get most of the playing time at third base. Sending Kubitza down makes room for the newly-acquired Shane Victorino on the active roster.
Yan Gomes is not in the Indians' lineup Tuesday.
It's just a day off for the 28-year-old catcher, who has a disappointing .223/.249/.346 slash line on the season. He's a pretty good bet to produce better numbers down the stretch. Roberto Perez is starting behind the plate Tuesday night against the Royals.
