Henderson Alvarez was solid over eight innings, allowing just two runs, but took a no-decision as the Marlins won 3-2 against the Braves on Thursday.

Alvarez made one big mistake, allowing a two-run home run to Chris Johnson in the second inning. Other than that, he stymied the Braves, allowing six hits overall while walking one and striking out four. In the process, he lowers his ERA a couple points to 2.62 and is now carrying a 1.23 WHIP and a 79/23 K/BB ratio. He'll face the Nationals at home in his next start.

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that teams have asked the Indians about the availability of Justin Masterson.

Making his way back from a knee injury, Masterson will make his second rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Friday and could wind up returning with another team. The 29-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the season after extension talks with the Indians this spring broke down. Masterson has put up a disappointing 5.51 ERA through 19 starts in his walk year, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him have a nice second half if his knee is right.

Aaron Harang pitched well but took a no-decision, limiting the Marlins to two runs over seven innings on Thursday.

Another solid outing for Harang, who has now allowed two runs or fewer in 14 of 21 starts this season. Against the Marlins, Harang allowed seven hits, walked two, and struck out five. The right-hander now sports a 3.31 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and a 104/49 K/BB ratio. He'll toe the slab against the Dodgers on the road next week.

Steve Cishek retired the Braves in 1-2-3 fashion as the Marlins won on Thursday.

Atypically, all three outs were fly outs. The right-hander has come back from the break with five consecutive scoreless outings after struggling in the few weeks leading up to the break. Cishek is now 24-for-27 in save opportunities with a 3.32 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 51/14 K/BB ratio.

Chris Johnson hit a two-run home run, his only hit in three at-bats, in a losing effort against the Marlins on Thursday.

Johnson took Henderson Alvarez yard in the second inning to give the Braves an early 2-0 lead. It's been a rough year for Johnson, but he has been swinging a better bat in July -- he has five home runs in the month, as compared to three between April and June. Overall, he's slashing .277/.299/.389 with eight home runs and 42 RBI.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia doubled twice and knocked in the winning run with a ninth-inning single in four trips to the plate as the Marlins downed the Braves on Thursday.

A big game for Salty, who has now hit safely in four of five games since the All-Star break. He doubled and scored in the fifth, and knocked in a go-ahead run in the ninth inning with a single off of Craig Kimbrel. The catcher is slashing .232/.333/.414 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI on the season.

Phil Hughes is considered day-to-day after being diagnosed with a bruised right shin.

Hughes was injured when he took an Adam Dunn comebacker in the fourth inning of Thursday's outing versus the White Sox. It doesn't appear that X-rays will be required, so Hughes should have a good shot to make his next start. He struck out four while allowing two runs over three frames before exiting.

J.D. Martinez was scratched from Thursday's lineup due to a minor upper quad injury.

Martinez tweaked his quad on Tuesday and has now sat out two straight contests. He'll be available to pinch-hit Thursday and it sounds like he should rejoin the lineup over the weekend.
