Ramon Cabrera was sent to Cincinnati on Sunday for an exam and MRI on his sore left hand.

Cabrera was recently hit on the back of his left ring finger by a foul ball and has been dealing with some soreness, but everything checked out OK with the tests. The Reds summoned Raffy Lopez from Triple-A Louisville in case a trip to the disabled list was needed, but Cabrera was set to rejoin the Reds before Monday's game.

Caleb Joseph was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons after he was hit in the groin area by a foul ball during Monday's game against the Red Sox.

Joseph was in a lot of pain after being hit in a very sensitive area, but he actually completed the game behind the plate. More should be known about his status on Tuesday.

Carlos Martinez struck out eight batters over eight scoreless innings Monday in the Cardinals' 6-0 victory over the Brewers.

Martinez was 0-5 with a 6.84 ERA in May entering the Memorial Day outing at Miller Park in Milwaukee, but he finished the month with an exclamation point. The hard-throwing righty yielded just five hits -- all singles -- and only issued one walk. He now stands 5-5 with a 3.69 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 50 strikeouts in 61 innings (10 starts) this season. Martinez gets the Giants at home next.

Matt Holliday went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI in Monday's defeat of the Brewers.

Holliday opened the game's scoring with an RBI single in the top of the third inning and then added another RBI single in the top of the fourth before cranking a 467-foot solo blast to left-center in the seventh. Holliday has been on a tear over the last three days and now boasts an .821 OPS with nine homers and 29 RBI in 50 games for the year. He's never finished a season with an OPS lower than .804.

Junior Guerra surrendered four runs -- three earned -- over 6 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Guerra was thoroughly out-dueled by Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez, who struck out eight batters over eight scoreless innings. St. Louis plated three runs in the third in a messy frame for the Milwaukee defense and then Matt Holliday drove in the fourth run against Guerra with an RBI single in the fifth. Guerra didn't walk a batter and struck out six, but he ultimately took his first loss and watched his ERA rise from 3.30 to 3.47. Next up is a road start in Philly.

Matt Carpenter finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored Monday afternoon against the Brewers.

Carpenter singled in his first two at-bats and then doubled to the right-field wall in his next two before striking out in the top of the ninth against Brewers reliever David Goforth. The brand new father has an .883 OPS with 14 doubles and 32 runs scored in 49 games this season for St. Louis.

Yunel Escobar (wrist) is not in Monday's lineup against the Tigers.

Escobar bruised his right wrist on Sunday and will get a day of rest. Gregorio Petit will start at third base Monday while Kole Calhoun will bat leadoff.

Red Sox optioned RHP Heath Hembree to Triple-A Pawtucket.

The move clears a spot for Eduardo Rodriguez to make his long-awaited season debut on Tuesday. Hembree owns a 2.14 ERA and 18/5 K/BB ratio over 21 innings this season and should be back eventually.
