Steve Cishek (hip) threw a 22-pitch bullpen session on Thursday.

It was the first time he's thrown off a mound this spring. Cishek threw at 80 percent effort and is scheduled for another pen session on Sunday. Cishek isn't going to be ready for Opening Day but should join the team as a setup man sometime in April. The right-hander lost his closer's gig to Edwin Diaz about midway through last season.

Odubel Herrera smacked his first homer of the spring and also added a single in Thursday's loss to the Twins.

Herrera was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to some cramping, but clearly he's fine. He took Nick Tepesch deep in the first inning and then showed off his trademark bat flip that we've all come to know and love. Herrera has eight hits in 22 at-bats this spring and will open the season as the Phillies' No. 3 hitter.

Edinson Volquez allowed two runs -- one earned -- over three innings versus the Cardinals on Thursday.

It was Volquez's first outing since returning from the World Baseball Classic and a piggyback start for Volquez and Dan Straily, who got the "official" start. The veteran right-hander has generally pitched pretty well this spring, although he's managed just a 5/5 K/BB ratio across 9 1/3 innings.

Luis Valbuena will miss 4-6 weeks with a strained right hamstring.

It's a Grade 1 strain, which is considered the least serious. It's still going to keep Valbuena out for at least the first month, which should allow C.J. Cron to settle in as the everyday first baseman. Valbuena's injury also increases Jefry Marte's chances of making the Opening Day roster. When healthy, Valbuena will platoon with Cron at first base.

Marlins optioned INF Brian Anderson to Double-A Jacksonville.

The Marlins also sent down Isaac Galloway, Matt Juengel and Moises Sierra. All three are headed to Triple-A New Orleans. Anderson had a great spring for the Marlins, hitting .368 with seven RBI over 38 Grapefruit League at-bats. The Marlins' roster is down to 41 with Opening Day a week and a half away.

Shawn O'Malley will need at least 10-14 days to fully recover from his appendectomy.

That puts O'Malley in a race against the clock for Opening Day. If O'Malley is unavailable, Taylor Motter would likely fill a utility role during his absence. O'Malley was hitting .278 with four steals in 16 Cactus League appearances before his appendectomy.

Robinson Cano was scratched from Thursday's Cactus League game against the Giants with a head cold.

Mike Freeman will draw the start at second with Cano under the weather. Cano has gone 2-for-6 in two games since coming back from the World Baseball Classic. He shouldn't miss more than a day or two.

Mariners optioned 1B Daniel Vogelbach to Triple-A Tacoma.

This comes as a stunner. Vogelbach was expected to platoon with Danny Valencia at first base but will instead begin in the minors after hitting just .228 with 19 strikeouts over 57 Cactus League at-bats. The 24-year-old went 1-for-12 with six strikeouts in his first taste of the big leagues last September. Obviously he needs a little more seasoning.
