Marlins optioned RHP Preston Claiborne to Triple-A New Orleans.
Claiborne had a very good showing this spring in the Grapefruit League, but the Marlins had no room for him on the Opening Day roster. The 27-year-old right-hander was claimed off waivers from the Yankees in December and should get a look at some point in Miami.
Tigers reassigned C Manuel Pina to minor league camp.
James McCann will open the 2015 regular season as the backup to starting catcher Alex Avila. Bryan Holaday also got cut from Tigers camp on Monday morning.
J.P. Arencibia was given a cortisone injection Monday for his injured right arm.
Arencibia has been diagnosed with a flexor mass strain and will remain shut down for the next several days. He is not going to be on the Orioles' active roster when the regular season opens next week.
Alex Cobb (forearm) will play catch again Monday.
Cobb resumed throwing on Saturday and felt fine. He's been slowed for the past couple of weeks by forearm tendinitis, but tests have ruled out structural damage and he should be ready to join the Rays' regular-season rotation by the end of April.
Drew Smyly (shoulder) is expected to face live hitters in his next throwing session.
Smyly tossed another bullpen session on Sunday and felt fine. He told reporters that he's confident he'll be able to make his 2015 debut sometime in April. "It would be something that goes on, a setback for me to not pitch in April," said the left-hander.
Red Sox acquired C Sandy Leon from the Nationals.
Leon was out of options and doubtful to make the Nationals' Opening Day roster. A much better opportunity awaits him in Boston, where he will serve as the backup to starting Red Sox catcher Ryan Hanigan. Christian Vazquez may be facing elbow surgery.
Cody Asche is back in the Phillies' lineup Monday.
Asche sat out a few games with tightness in his back. He will start at third base on Opening Day.
An MRI taken Sunday on Casey Janssen's right shoulder showed no major structural damage.
Janssen felt discomfort in his throwing shoulder after his latest Grapefruit League appearance, but it sounds like he'll be fine with a bit of rest. Opening Day is just a week away, so the right-hander might have to be placed on the 15-day disabled list.
