Blue Jays acquired RHP Jason Grilli from the Braves for RHP Sean Ratcliffe.

Grilli has posted an ugly 5.29 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, and 23/13 K/BB ratio in 17 innings this season, but the Blue Jays apparently believe he has something left in the tank. The 39-year-old right-hander will presumably join up with the Jays on Wednesday in Toronto. He figures to pitch in low-leverage situations initially.

Braves acquired RHP Sean Ratcliffe from the Blue Jays for RHP Jason Grilli.

Ratcliffe was an 18th-round pick of the Jays in 2013 and he owns a 4.91 ERA in 62 1/3 professional innings, all below High-A ball. The young right-hander (he turned 21 in April) is more a project than a prospect.

Chase Whitley (elbow) worked in breaking balls Tuesday in a 35-pitch bullpen session.

It was his first time using those pitches since his Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last May. Whitley could become an option for the Rays in July.

Alex Cobb (elbow) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday at Tropicana Field.

He worked in breaking balls for the first time since undergoing Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last May. Cobb is aiming to join the Rays' starting rotation at some point in July. He hasn't appeared in a game at the major league level since September 2014.

Andrelton Simmons (thumb) took batting practice and fielded grounders on Tuesday.

Simmons resumed baseball activities last week and is now progressing quickly toward a minor league rehab assignment. Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register suspects the shortstop could be ready in three weeks. He was given a 6-8 week timetable when he landed on the disabled list May 10 with a UCL tear in his left thumb.

Julio Urias is returning to the Dodgers' rotation.

He'll fill in this time for Alex Wood, who is headed to the disabled list with a left triceps strain. Urias struggled in his major league debut last Friday against the Mets, but it looks like he'll face the light-hitting Braves in his second audition with Dodgers. The stud southpaw is worth another shot in eligible fantasy leagues.

Alex Wood is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a left triceps injury.

Wood apparently suffered the injury near the end of his five-inning start Monday against the Cubs. Julio Urias is going to take his spot in the rotation this weekend versus the Braves -- a nice matchup for the young lefty. Wood had registered a decent 3.99 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and 62/19 K/BB ratio over 56 1/3 innings (10 starts) this season for Los Angeles.
May 31 - 6:23 PM

Anthony DeSclafani (oblique) could join the Reds' rotation next week against the Cardinals.

He struck out seven batters over four innings of one-run ball Monday in his second rehab start with Triple-A Louisville. DeSclafani will make one more minor league appearance on Saturday before possibly taking the ball for the Reds next Thursday versus St. Louis. The right-hander has been out all season with an oblique strain. He was a popular fantasy sleeper before the injury and is worth a stash in deeper leagues.
