Sean Doolittle worked a perfect ninth inning Thursday against the Orioles to earn his 20th save.

Doolittle needed 14 pitches to dispatch of the middle of the Orioles' order, retiring Mark Trumbo, Jonathan Schoop and Craig Gentry to preserve the two-run lead. There wasn't much consternation surrounding Doolittle's role following the Nationals' acquisition of Royals closer Kelvin Herrera, but it's still reassuring to see him getting the call in the ninth, especially with Herrera pitching the eight in pretty clearly defined roles. The southpaw has earned the ninth inning with an insane 1.65 ERA, 0.55 WHIP and 43/3 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings this year.

Kevin Gausman limited the Nationals to two runs over six innings in a no-decision Thursday.

Gausman largely matched Nationals ace Max Scherzer pitch for pitch, and he actually led the Cy Young Award winner until yielding a tying run in the sixth inning. It left both without a say in the decision, keeping Gausman's record at 3-6 while lowering his ERA to 4.38 through 15 starts. He's still winless since May 11, a fact he'll look to change Tuesday against a tough Mariners squad.

Max Scherzer struck out nine while allowing a pair of solo home runs over seven innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Orioles.

Scherzer served up solo dongs to Colby Rasmus and Mark Trumbo but gave up just three other hits and walked just one on the evening. The start was the fifth in a row in which he allowed two or fewer runs while striking out nine or more, but he's just 2-2 in that span despite being 10-3 overall. He continues to lead the league in most every pitching category, ranking first in the NL with those 10 wins while his 152 strikeouts are also tops in the league. He'll carry a stout 2.09 ERA and 0.85 WHIP into a tasty Tuesday matchup with the Rays.

Updating an earlier report, Lorenzo Cain left Thursday's game against the Cardinals with a right hamstring cramp.

Jun 21 - 9:48 PM

Lorenzo Cain left Thursday's game against the Cardinals with an apparent leg injury.

Cain was grabbing his right hamstring when he came off the field at the end of the fourth inning. Domingo Santana entered the game in Cain's place while Christian Yelich moved from right field to center. Cain went 2-for-3 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base before exiting.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports Mets RHP prospect Drew Smith will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Kevin Kaczmarski is also heading to Queens. Clearly the Mets, losers of 15 of their last 19, are ready to shake things up. Smith arrived last year in a trade that sent Lucas Duda to Tampa Bay. The 24-year-old has excelled in the minors, compiling a 2.88 ERA over 24 appearances (one start) for Vegas and Double-A Binghamton this season. He's New York's No. 30 prospect, according to MLB.com.

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports Mets OF prospect Kevin Kaczmarski will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 26-year-old has hit .346 in the minors this year including .363 over 80 at-bats for Las Vegas. A ninth-round pick out of Evansville in 2015, this will be Kaczmarski's first stint in the big leagues.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons acknowledged that Jaime Garcia could be moved to the bullpen.

The left-hander has been dreadful this year (6.16 ERA in 13 starts) and could lose his spot in the starting rotation with Marcus Stroman (shoulder) slated to return this weekend. Sam Gaviglio would likely be called on Sunday against the Angels if Garcia is indeed demoted to a long relief role.
