Jose Fernandez (elbow) will throw off a mound on Sunday for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery.

He's slated to throw 15 fastballs during the session. Fernandez will be built up slowly from there, eventually mixing breaking balls into his mound work. The Marlins will obviously proceed extra cautiously with their young ace, as Fernandez isn't expected back until mid-June at the earliest. He had Tommy John surgery last May.

Padres manager Bud Black on Friday listed Wil Myers as an option to hit leadoff.

"(Yangervis) Solarte, (Wil) Venable, (Cameron) Maybin and Myers – let’s start there," Black said. Myers is the only one of the names Black listed who's guaranteed a spot in the lineup, so it's a reasonable guess that he's the top candidate to bat leadoff. While not a prototypical leadoff hitter, Myers did sport a nice .354 on-base percentage during his American League Rookie of the Year-winning 2013 campaign. Solarte could hit leadoff should he win the third base job, but Will Middlebrooks is the favorite to start there.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Saturday that he's deciding between Bartolo Colon, Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom for his Opening Day starter.

A report on Friday indicated that Colon was the favorite, but Collins isn't tipping his hand. "You’ve got a guy who won 15 games last year, one who pitched really well in the second half and the Rookie of the Year," Collins said. "We’ll have to see." The Mets will also feature Matt Harvey and Jon Niese in what should be a formidable rotation.

Alex Avila (back) will resume baseball activities on Sunday.

Avila was sidelined a couple days with tightness in his back, but it was never considered worrisome. "Feels better," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of Avila.

Derek Holland was scratched from an appearance in Sunday's intrasquad game due to "normal spring soreness" in his left shoulder, according to Rangers general manager Jon Daniels.

"No alarm bells," Daniels added. Holland is simply expected to throw on Monday instead, so it does appear that there's nothing to worry about here. The left-hander is a nice bounce-back candidate this season after being limited to just 37 innings in 2014 as he worked his way back from knee surgery.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Cuban infielder Hector Olivera has taken a physical for a number of teams.

Rosenthal lists the Dodgers among those clubs. Olivera has yet to be declared a free agent by Major League Baseball, but teams want to be prepared once that happens. MLB Network's Peter Gammons reported last month that five teams are willing to bid over $70 million for Olivera.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Saturday that Chris Owings (shoulder) is progressing ahead of schedule.

Owings had been slated to miss the first 8-10 Cactus League games as he works his way back from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, but it sounds like he could be ready sooner than that. "I don't have an exact (return) date," Hale said, "but he's past where I thought he was." Owings has bounce-back potential as a fantasy option if he's able to stay healthy.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Saturday that Yasmany Tomas will see some playing time in the outfield during Cactus League play.

The D'Backs want Tomas to handle third base well enough to start there, but they'll give him reps in the outfield just in case. "We have to prioritize who gets all these at-bats in spring training," Hale said. "He's one we want to get a lot of at-bats to get a good (look) at his offense, too." Jake Lamb will be in line to start at third base if Arizona ends up having to put Tomas in left field.
