Victor Martinez (knee) was scratched from Friday's lineup due to weather-related concerns.

It's currently sunny in Florida, but showers are expected so the Tigers are playing it safe with V-Mart's surgically-repaired left knee. Martinez admitted to feeling a bit of soreness in the knee during Thursday's game, but it wasn't a cause for concern. Things are pointing towards him being ready for Opening Day.

An MRI on Shawn Tolleson's right forearm showed no structural damage.

Tolleson will be examined by Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister on Friday to determine his next step. The MRI news is obviously good, but Tolleson is still expected to begin the season on the disabled list. "In our minds it was very positive news," assistant general manager Thad Levine said. "We don’t think he’s lost any significant arm strength."

Brandon Guyer (ankle) returned to Grapefruit League action on Thursday.

Guyer missed a few days with a sprained ankle. The outfielder is set to see ample playing time versus southpaws this season.

Nate Jones (elbow) will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

It will be the first time he's thrown off a mound since last July's Tommy John surgery. Jones will miss most, if not all, of the 2015 season while rehabbing.

Denard Span (abdomen) will take light swings with a fungo bat on Friday.

Span also ran sprints on Friday and has been playing catch for over a week. The outfielder is coming along nicely from core muscle surgery but isn't close to game action and is still expected to miss the first few weeks of the season.

Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said Thursday that Jon Gray's arbitration timeline is a "non-factor" when considering whether the righty will make the rotation.

"That is not part of our consideration," Bridich said. "Jon has pitched very well, but there still are a lot of things to consider, but the decision will not be based on (arbitration)." Gray has allowed three runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out nine in 13 innings so far this spring and has a chance to crack the Opening Day rotation following the release of Jhoulys Chacin and injuries to Jorge De La Rosa (groin) and David Hale (oblique). He's competing with Eddie Butler, Christian Bergman, Chad Bettis and John Lannan. The former No. 2 overall pick has loads of upside, though it's capped by him calling Coors Field home. Keep an eye on this camp battle as it comes down the stretch.

Brandon Barnes is using a completely overhauled swing this spring.

Barnes has added a high leg kick and intends to sacrifice power for more contact. "I tried to refine who I am and what type of player I am in the box," said Barnes. "I'm not a guy who's going to hit 30 home runs. I know that. I'm the big guy who needs to be a pest, drive the ball into gaps, hit doubles, use my speed to my advantage, bunt, all those things." The odds are against the new swing making a huge different for the career .242/.286/.365 hitter, but it's interesting to note. Most of Barnes' value is likely to continue to be tied to his plus defense.

Kevin Gausman will start Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Thursday that he was considering using Gausman in shorter stints just in case he's needed in relief, but the righty will be stretched out to around five innings Tuesday. While Gausman could still be the favorite for the No. 5 starter spot, it's possible the O's will pull a surprise and give the job to Ubaldo Jimenez.
