Felix Hernandez struck out four batters in a two-inning start Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks.

Hernandez allowed a solo homer to Brandon Drury in the first inning but otherwise looked sharp in the planned abbreviated outing. He got in some extra work in the bullpen to stay on track for his Opening Day start next Monday against the Astros.

Zack Greinke surrendered three earned runs over four innings Tuesday in his final Cactus League outing against the Mariners.

Greinke sat mostly in the 88-89 mph range with his fastball and topped out at 90.4 mph, per beat writer Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. That's not good for a guy who averaged 91.3 mph on that pitch in 2016 and 91.8 mph in 2015. He is still owed $172.5 million from the Diamondbacks.

Junior Guerra allowed four earned runs over 3 2/3 innings Tuesday in his final Cactus League start against the Indians.

It wasn't as bad as his 12-run drubbing last Thursday against the Athletics, but this is not the kind of final spring outing you want from your Opening Day starter. Guerra walked two and gave up nine hits while tallying only two strikeouts. The right-hander finishes Cactus League play with a 6.75 ERA.

Chad Kuhl has officially won a spot in the Pirates' rotation.

There had never really been any doubt. Kuhl entered camp as a big favorite to capture a spot, and he won one with a 3.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP over four starts this spring. The 24-year-old should be a solid enough starter for Pittsburgh, but he doesn't miss enough bats to be useful outside of deep fantasy leagues.

Jake Arrieta yielded three earned runs over four innings Tuesday in his Cactus League start against the Giants.

Denard Span led off the game with a solo homer and then Jarrett Parker followed a Brandon Crawford double with an RBI single. San Francisco struck again in the second inning when Span singled, stole second base, and scored on an Arrieta wild pitch. It's been a mediocre spring so far for the 31-year-old right-hander, but he still carries top-tier fantasy upside into the 2017 campaign.

Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Tuesday of Gregory Polanco (shoulder) that the team is "still optimistic that he'll be a go."

Polanco has been on the shelf for a few days due to a sore left shoulder and he won't resume throwing until at least this weekend. The shoulder has been a recurring issue for him, including during the second half last season. He's still hitting and the Pirates remain hopeful, but this situation obviously should be monitored closely.

Julio Urias tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings Tuesday in his Cactus League start against the Padres.

Urias wasn't allowed to take the outing any longer than that because he isn't properly stretched out. That is also why he will not be on the Dodgers' active roster to open the 2017 regular season. Look for the young left-hander to arrive in the majors for good sometime in mid-to-late April.
Mar 28 - 5:44 PM

Antonio Senzatela gave up three earned runs over five innings Tuesday in his Cactus League start against the Rangers.

Senzatela was doing fine until the top of the fifth, when the Rangers plated three runs on two singles and two doubles. The 22-year-old right-hander has allowed nine runs -- seven earned -- in 10 1/3 innings since Rockies manager Bud Black named him a legitimate candidate for the Opening Day rotation. The final spot is probably going to go to Kyle Freeland.
