Cardinals signed C A.J. Pierzynski.

Pierzynski will be active and in uniform for Saturday's game against the Cubs. The 37-year-old catcher was hitting .254/.286/.348 with four homers over 72 games before being cut loose by the Red Sox.

Diamondbacks right-handed pitching prospect Archie Bradley allowed five hits, three walks, two hit batsman, and seven runs over 2 2/3 innings for Double-A Mobile on Friday.

Bradley only allowed five hits, but two were doubles and one was a home run. Bradley was dominating Double-A hitters, but his most recent start can be called a "clunker." The Diamondbacks have begun to sell off pieces, and Bradley could see time in Arizona before the end of the year.

Rangers outfield prospect Nomar Mazara went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run for Low-A Hickory on Friday, raising his season line to .263/.350/.464.

Mazara has been a one-man wrecking crew since the beginning of June, hitting .304/.401/.571 with 11 doubles, one triple, and 12 home runs in 48 games. Mazara has the potential to hit .275 with 30 home runs, but will likely be moved along slowly and won't make his major league debut until 2017.
Jul 26 - 11:31 AM

Rays catching prospect Nick Ciuffo went 3-for-6 with a double and a walk for rookie-level Princeton on Friday.

Ciuffo has struggled in 2014, hitting just .198/.287/.229 over his first 27 games of the season. He his your typical sweet-swinging left-handed hitting catcher, but will need at least three more full seasons in the minor leagues before he has a chance to make his major league debut.
Jul 26 - 11:26 AM

Mariners outfield prospect Gabriel Guerrero went 2-for-5 on Friday for High-A High Desert, raising his season line to .313/.353/.464.

Guerrero has hit .375/.403/.594 with five doubles and three home runs during his 14-game hitting streak, and has hit .348/.372/.551 during the month of July. Guerrero has hit a respectable .291/.333/.455 against righties, but has browbeaten lefties to a .380/.415/.490 line.
Jul 26 - 11:22 AM

Cardinals designated C George Kottaras for assignment.

The veteran backstop became expendable with Friday's acquisition of A.J. Pierzynski. He appeared in just four games during his brief stay in St. Louis. He shouldn't have much difficulty finding another organization willing to take a shot on him.
Jul 26 - 11:18 AM

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Giants are the team in discussions with the Red Sox about acquiring Jake Peavy.

Jen Royle of the Boston Herald reported earlier that a National League club was close to acquiring the Boston right-hander, and the destination now appears to be known. With the continued uncertainty on the health of Matt Cain, Peavy would be a nice addition for rotation depth. His fantasy value would also increase with a return to the National League.
Jul 26 - 11:11 AM

Juan Francisco is not in the Blue Jays starting lineup for Saturday's afternoon tilt against the Yankees.

It's merely a routine day of rest for Francisco against southpaw Chris Capuano. Shawn Tolleson will get the start at third base while Dan Johnson functions as the Jays designated hitter.
