Casey Kelly (groin) has been given clearance for field work and some baseball activities.

He isn't however, ready to resume throwing bullpen sessions. The Padres are opting to play things cautiously as Kelly recovers from a minor groin strain and won't rush him back into action. He's expected to begin the season in the rotation at Triple-A Tuscon.

Joel Peralta (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday.

Peralta had been shut down for a few days due to soreness in his right shoulder, but resumed his throwing program recently and is expected to be ready in plenty of time for the start of the regular season. He's the leading internal candidate to fulfill the closer's role at the start of the season while Kenley Jansen recovers from his foot surgery.

Erik Bedard will start the Dodgers Cactus League opener against the White Sox on Wednesday.

The veteran left-hander is on the outside looking in for a spot in the Dodgers starting rotation, so he'll attempt to earn his way onto the squad as a long reliever. He registered a troublesome 4.76 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 75 2/3 frames with the Rays in 2014.

Hyun-Jin Ryu (back) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday.

The 27-year-old southpaw has taken things easy the past couple of days after tweaking a muscle in his back during a fielding drill on Tuesday. He should have no difficulty getting ready in time for the start of the regular season.
Feb 28 - 12:53 PM

Athletics manager Bob Melvin announced Saturday that Brad Mills will start Tuesday's spring opener.

Jesse Chavez will make his first start on Wednesday while veteran southpaw Barry Zito will start on Thursday. All three hurlers are looking to compete for one of the final spots in the A's Opening Day rotation, but could also earn a spot as a long reliever.

Alex Rodriguez received reps at first base on Friday for the first time in his big league career.

The Yankees are trying to determine if A-Rod can be a serviceable backup behind Mark Teixeira at the position. Rodriguez has been open to the idea and is said to be "anxious to learn" the new position. While he's slated to see most of his action out of the designated hitter spot, increasing his versatility would provide manager Joe Girardi with more options to getting his bat in the lineup.

Conor Gillaspie bulked up over the offseason and quit chewing tobacco in an effort to get stronger and help get through the grind of the long season.

Gillaspie added 15-20 pounds of muscle to prevent the late-season swoon that he endured in 2014, where he slashed just .208/.259/.333 with three homers over his final 47 contests. He's expected to bat sixth in a much-improved White Sox lineup, which should provide plenty of RBI chances.

Padres manager Bud Black announced Saturday that Jason Lane will start the team's Cactus League opener against the Mariners on Wednesday.

Lane, who is in camp as a non-roster invitee, faces an uphill battle for a spot in the team's Opening Day bullpen. He surrendered just one run over 10 1/3 innings for the Padres in 2014.
