Padres manager Andy Green said Friday that Tyson Ross (shoulder) could pick up a baseball within the next week.

The right-hander has been in San Diego doing weighted-ball drills while he continues to recover from inflammation in his pitching shoulder. They're going to play things very cautiously in his rehab, but it at least sounds as though he's trending in the right direction.

Sonny Gray (shoulder) is expected to throw off a mound on Saturday.

He played catch without any issues on Thursday and indicated Friday that his trapezius was feeling much better. A's manager Bob Melvin was unsure how many bullpens Gray would need before being cleared for a minor league rehab start, but it sounds like he could potentially be ready to return around when he's first eligible on June 6.

Chasen Shreve (shoulder) is expected to resume throwing next weekend.

He has rejoined the team after receiving a cortisone injection on Thursday. There remains no clear timetable for a potential return to the Yankees bullpen for the 25-year-old left-hander.

Jon Lester yielded two runs (one earned) in 6 1/3 innings in Friday’s 6-2 win over the Phillies.

It was a solid performance after his worst start of the year. The second run scored after Lester was pulled from the game. And after the first of two rain delays. The southpaw struck out seven and walked two to improve to 5-3 with a 2.48 ERA. He’ll get the Dodgers in his next start.
May 27 - 7:07 PM

Adam Morgan was tagged for six runs over four innings in a loss to the Cubs on Friday.

Morgan gave up eight hits, including three home runs. His ERA now sits at 6.67 through six starts. The Phillies could look in another direction soon.
May 27 - 7:07 PM

Jorge Soler went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI as the Cubs topped the Phillies on Friday.

Soler got the Cubs on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning before slugging a long solo homer in the fourth. According to Statcast, the blast checked in at 461 feet, which is the longest home run by a Cubs player this season. After getting off to a miserable start, the 24-year-old is hitting .346 (9-for-26) with three home runs and six RBI over his last nine games. The talent is clearly there.
May 27 - 7:06 PM

David Ross slugged the 100th home run of his career Friday against the Phillies.

It was a three-run blast during a four-run fourth inning against Adam Morgan. Ross intends to retire after the season and he’s going out strong. The 39-year-old is batting .254 with four home runs and an .828 OPS.
May 27 - 7:06 PM

Maikel Franco (ankle) drove in two runs in his return to the lineup Friday against the Cubs.

Franco had a sacrifice fly in the third inning before driving in a run with an infield single in the seventh. The 23-year-old made an early exit from Wednesday’s game after spraining his right ankle, but he should be good to go moving forward.
