According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the "Yankees' sense right now" is that Andrew Miller will not be traded ahead of the August 1 deadline.
But that could change over the next couple of days, depending on the offers that come in. New York got a terrific haul for impending free agent Aroldis Chapman on Monday, landing shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres, outfield prospect Billy McKinney, right-hander Adam Warren, and minor league outfielder Rashad Crawford from the Cubs. Miller, under contract through 2018, owns a dominant 1.45 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 74/7 K/BB ratio in 43 1/3 innings this season for the fourth-place Yankees.
Aaron Altherr (wrist) has shifted his rehab assignment to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Alther is batting .353/.511/.471 with one home run and two stolen bases in 11 minor league rehab games between the Gulf Coast League, High-A Clearwater, and Double-A Reading. Out all season with a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, Altherr should be cleared to join the Phillies' outfield mix by the end of this week.
Phillies recalled INF Taylor Featherston from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Featherston will take over for Andres Blanco, who landed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a fractured index finger. Featherston, 26, was batting .264/.320/.446 with 12 home runs and 32 RBI through 87 games this season at the Triple-A level.
Phillies placed INF Andres Blanco on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left index finger.
Blanco suffered the injury Sunday in the Phillies' loss to the Pirates when Gregory Polanco slid into his hand at third base in the bottom of the fifth inning. Blanco could very well be done for the season.
Cubs acquired LHP Aroldis Chapman from the Yankees in exchange for SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, OF Billy McKinney, and OF Rashad Crawford.
There had been reports of the Cubs attempting to work out a contract extension with Chapman, but the impending free agent left-hander is apparently intent on hitting the open market this winter. New York also tried an extension with Chapman back in June, but those talks obviously failed. The fire-balling 28-year-old will take over at closer on the north side of Chicago, with Hector Rondon shifting into a setup role. Chapman owns a dominant 2.01 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 44/8 K/BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings since returning in May from a domestic violence suspension.
Yankees acquired SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, OF Billy McKinney, and OF Rashad Crawford from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman.
Torres is the centerpiece of this deal for the Yankees, who could be launching into a kind of firesale as they attempt a rolling rebuild. Torres, 19, has batted .275/.359/.433 with nine home runs, 47 RBI, 19 stolen bases, and 62 runs scored over 94 games this season in High-A ball while playing excellent defense at the shortstop position. Baseball America, MLB.com, and Baseball Prospectus all ranked him a top-50 prospect leading into 2016. It's a great get for New York.
Yankees acquired RHP Adam Warren, SS Gleyber Torres, OF Billy McKinney, and OF Rashad Crawford from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman.
Warren is returning to the Bronx after a mostly disappointing half-year stay on the north side of Chicago. The 28-year-old right-hander holds a 5.91 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 27/19 K/BB ratio in 35 innings (one start, 28 relief appearances) this season. He could move into the starting rotation with the Yankees if trades this week open up a vacancy. Initially he will probably work in mid-relief.
Yankees acquired OF Billy McKinney, SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, and OF Rashad Crawford from the Cubs in exchange for LHP Aroldis Chapman.
McKinney has struggled this season at Double-A Tennessee, batting just .252/.355/.322 with one home run in 88 games, but he was considered a top-100 prospect leading into the 2016 campaign and he's relatively young for the Double-A level at age 21. Chicago acquired McKinney from Oakland two years ago as part of the Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel trade. He'll try to get back on the radar in the Yankees' system.
