Seahawks fired DC Kris Richard and LBs coach Michael Barrow.

Jan 16 - 6:25 PM

Seahawks hired ex-Colts QBs coach Brian Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator.

It was time for the Seahawks to try something new on offense. It was not time for them to hire Schottenheimer, who has overseen one ineffective offense after another at the NFL level. Some of Schottenheimer's struggles can be blamed on the defensive-minded coaches he coordinated for — namely, Rex Ryan and Jeff Fisher — but he's simply provided zero reason to believe he is someone who should be leading an NFL attack. Throwing out an injured and aging Brett Favre, Russell Wilson will be the best quarterback Schottenheimer has worked with. It's not a good development for Wilson, who has been tasked with carrying far too heavy of a load since Marshawn Lynch's decline and departure from Seattle.

Steelers re-signed CB Mike Hilton to a one-year, $555,000 contract.

The Steelers' slot corner, Hilton was an exclusive rights free agent. In other words, he could only become a free agent if the Steelers let him. Playing his first regular season snaps, the 2016 UDFA was an asset at nickel back this season, and should retain his job for 2018. He will be a restricted free agent in 2019.

The Charlotte Observer believes the Panthers will have a tough time re-signing impending free agent DT Star Lotulelei.

The Panthers gave fellow DT Kawann Short a big-money deal last spring, and Lotulelei is coming off arguably his worst season. Last summer, the Observer believed Lotulelei's future would depend on Vernon Butler's 2017 play. The 2016 first-rounder took a (small) step forward. Veteran Kyle Love is also signed cheaply for 2018.

The Charlotte Observer believes the Panthers are in danger of losing LG Andrew Norwell in free agency.

The Panthers already have a ton of money invested in their offensive line, and 26-year-old former UDFA Norwell is coming off another excellent season. Beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue believes Norwell could be in for a reunion with ex-Panthers GM Dave Gettleman in New York.

Impending free agent Drew Brees says he has no plans to test the market, and that he hopes to re-sign with the Saints before the start of the new league year.

"I'm not in the mood to make anything secretive," Brees said. "It's the same way I felt two days ago. It's the same way I felt 12 years ago. That is that I'll be here as long as they'll have me, hopefully." Brees, who turned 39 on Monday, cannot be franchise tagged, giving him a little leverage even if he insists he doesn't want to test the market. Brees' main goal could be some guaranteed money for 2019.

Leonard Fournette was "OK" and able to drive home following a Tuesday fender bender.

The story had some currency on social media, but seems barely worth reporting. We will update the situation if it somehow affects Fournette's practice status.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports a group of the Steelers' limited partners want coach Mike Tomlin fired.

Tomlin has never had a losing season in 11 years with the Steelers while winning at least 10 games eight times, but that record has not prevented his name from popping up in rumors the last couple years. To be fair to the rabble-rousers, the Steelers have not been to the Super Bowl since 2010 and have made the Championship Game just once over that run, arguably an underachievement given the talent on the roster. Still, it remains unlikely Tomlin is shown the door, but perhaps the discontent will lead to changes to his staff. For what it is worth, Tomlin did not throw his support behind OC Todd Haley when given the chance during his season-ending press conference.
