FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that Giants and Rangers are discussing an Alex Rios swap.

The Rangers are amenable to picking up a portion of what remains of the outfielder's $12.5 million salary this season, and Rios' contract includes a reasonable $13.5 million club option for 2015. Rios is slashing a respectable .304/.335/.430 and would represent a nice fit for AT&T Park with his gap power and speed.

Cardinals acquired RHP John Lackey and LHP Corey Littrell from the Red Sox for RHP Joe Kelly and OF Allen Craig.

It's another exciting blockbuster trade on an active 2014 deadline day. Lackey has posted a strong 3.60 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 116/32 K/BB ratio in 137 1/3 innings this season for Boston and should be even better with the move to the National League. He holds a bargain $500,000 club option for the 2015 season as a result of his 2012 Tommy John surgery. The Cardinals gave up two big major league pieces in Kelly and Craig, but they're both having disappointing years.

The Tigers are "making a big push" for Andrew Miller, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.

Detroit, which acquired Joakim Soria from the Rangers last week, would like to upgrade its supply of left-handed relievers, which currently counts Ian Krol, Phil Coke and Blaine Hardy amongst its ranks. Miller would be a godsend. He's posted a 2.34 ERA and 69/13 K/BB ratio over 42 1/3 innings this year and is arguably the top available left-hander out there.

Red Sox acquired OF Allen Craig and RHP Joe Kelly from the Cardinals for RHP John Lackey and LHP Corey Littrell.

Craig had an outstanding .312/.364/.500 batting line in 328 games between 2011-2013, but he's looked like a completely different player in 2014 -- gimpy in the field and unable to hit the ball with authority at the plate. He'll presumably take over in left for the Red Sox, who will try to get him back on track. Craig, 30, is owed $5.5 million in 2015, $9 million in 2016, $11 million in 2017, and then has a $13 million team option for 2018.

Red Sox acquired RHP Joe Kelly and OF Allen Craig from the Cardinals for RHP John Lackey and LHP Corey Littrell.

Kelly owns a promising 3.25 ERA in 266 career major league innings, but he's made half of his appearances in pitcher-friendly Busch Stadium and likely won't have as much luck on batted balls with the move to Fenway Park. The 26-year-old right-hander seems like a bullpen arm long term for Boston. He is under control through 2018.

Blue Jays recalled RHP Chad Jenkins from Triple-A Buffalo.

Jenkins has a decent 3.72 ERA in 15 appearances this season for Toronto. He will pitch in middle relief.
Jul 31 - 12:42 PM

Rockies designated INF Ryan Wheeler for assignment.

Colorado needed to open a spot on the 40-man roster to add Pedro Hernandez for Thursday's start, and Wheeler became the victim. The 25-year-old slashed .232/.281/.375 across 64 plate appearances. Since he can't play up the middle, that won't cut it.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cardinals have acquired John Lackey from the Red Sox.

Joe Kelly and Allen Craig are headed to the Red Sox in an interesting three-player swap. Lackey was sporting a cool 3.60 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 116/32 K/BB ratio in 137 1/3 innings this season for Boston and gets a nice fantasy boost moving from the American League to the National League, and from Fenway Park to Busch Stadium. He holds a bargain $500,000 option for 2015.
