Blue Jays manager John Gibbons indicated Monday that Devon Travis (knee) is likely to be ready to play on Opening Day.

"It’s starting to look that way, but nothing definite yet," Gibbons said. Travis didn't make his Grapefruit League debut until last Friday, as he was slow to recover from last November's knee surgery. He figures to receive some extra days off early on in the season, but it sounds like the second baseman will be out their on April 3 in Baltimore.

Kennys Vargas (foot) took batting practice Monday.

Vargas has been out of game action after fouling a ball off his left foot last Friday, but he did some running Sunday and has now resumed hitting. It's possible Vargas will be ready in time for Opening Day, but he seems to have fallen behind ByungHo Park in the battle for designated hitter at-bats.

Jhonny Peralta (knee) is expected back in the lineup Tuesday.

Peralta exited Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his left knee. He's been sore, but X-rays were negative and he'll be fine.

Lance Lynn (rib) will start in a minor league game on Thursday.

Lynn was pulled from a Grapefruit League outing Saturday with a rib injury, although the Cardinals said his removal was precautionary. At this point, there's been nothing to suggest the ailment could keep him from making his first start once the regular season begins.

Kyle Hendricks got food poisoning this weekend in Las Vegas.

Hendricks said he stopped at a taco place and called it a "bad decision." He spent most of the day Monday in the training room at the Cubs' spring training facility, but this is not something that should affect his readiness for the opening of the 2017 campaign. Hendricks, last year's ERA king, is scheduled to start the Cubs' fifth regular-season game.

Bo Schultz will have his right elbow examined by a specialist this week in New York.

Mike Wilner of Sportsnet says surgery is "considered likely" for the 31-year-old right-hander. Schultz was trying to win back a spot in the Toronto bullpen this spring after posting a rough 5.51 ERA in 16 relief appearances last year.

Addison Russell (back) is out of the Cubs' Cactus League lineup again on Monday.

Russell hasn't appeared in a Cactus League game since last Wednesday because of a stiff back, but it sounds like the Cubs are simply playing it safe. The young shortstop should be ready for Opening Day.

Ben Zobrist (neck) remains out of Cactus League action on Monday.

Zobrist has been out for over a week because of a stiff neck, though it sounds like he might return Tuesday. The veteran second baseman should be fine by the first game of the 2017 regular season.
