Shin-Soo Choo is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Mets.

He'll get a day off with left-hander Jon Niese on the hill for New York. Derrick Robinson will play center field and bat leadoff.

Pirates optioned RHP Jered Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis.

He'll head back down to the minors now that Jose Contreras is back from the bereavement list. Hughes has a 4.61 ERA and 13/9 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings this season and should get another shot in the Pirates' bullpen before long.
May 21 - 2:47 PM

Pirates activated RHP Jose Contreras from the bereavement list.

Contreras has been away from the team since Friday. The veteran right-hander returns to a 4.50 ERA and 4/1 K/BB ratio over four innings this season.

Cubs claimed RHP Eduardo Sanchez off waivers from the Cardinals; assigned him to Triple-A Iowa.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch speculates that Sanchez was cleared from the Cardinals' 40-man roster in order to make room for Tyler Lyons. Either way, the Cubs were quick to pounce. The 24-year-old has struggled with his control, but he has a big arm and has displayed the ability to get swings-and-misses at the big league level. He could be a useful bullpen piece for Chicago.

Athletics sent 1B Daric Barton outright to Triple-A Sacramento.

Barton cleared waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. This is actually the second time he has gone unclaimed since the end of spring training, which speaks to how far his stock has fallen in recent years. The 27-year-old batted .143 (3-for-21) in eight games with the A's and will function as minor league depth.

Jose Altuve has dropped Scott Boras as his agent and has rejoined Scott Pucino and Wil Polidor of Octagon.

Altuve left Octagon about a year ago to align himself with Boras, but he has had a change of heart. The 23-year-old second baseman won't be arbitration-eligible for the first time until after the 2014 season and is under team control through 2017, so the Astros have plenty of time to discuss a potential extension. However, the switch from Boras to Octagon likely increases the chance of getting a deal done.
May 21 - 2:21 PM

Ted Lilly will start Saturday against the Cardinals.

Lilly was activated from the disabled list Monday and will be available out of the bullpen Tuesday night, but Dodgers manager Don Mattingly will try to keep away from using him if possible. The veteran left-hander owns a 5.63 ERA over two starts this season. He'll have a tough matchup Saturday, but should be owned in NL-only leagues.
May 21 - 2:16 PM

Marlins prospect left-hander Andrew Heaney allowed an unearned run on four hits and two walks while registering nine strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings for High-A Jupiter on Monday.

Heaney's start to the season had been delayed due to a lat injury sustained at the onset of spring training, but his outing on Monday suggests it's no longer a concern. The ninth overall pick in the 2012 draft, Heaney has a chance to move quickly through the Marlins' system.
