Matt Adams is not in the Cardinals' lineup Friday.

He's getting a breather against tough lefty Gio Gonzalez. Allen Craig is playing first base, with Shane Robinson handling right field. Kolten Wong is also sitting out, as Mark Ellis is at second base.

Tigers optioned OF Tyler Collins to Triple-A Toledo.

The Tigers have called up Justin Miller in his place, as they'll go with 13 pitchers for now. Collins had two hits in just 14 at-bats while up with the big club.

Cardinals prospect OF Stephen Piscotty hit his first home run of the season Thursday for Triple-A Memphis.

The 23-year-old is off to a great start this year, batting .327/.377/.449 with four extra-base hits and nine RBI through his first 13 games for Memphis. Piscotty opened eyes during spring training and made a strong impression on the Cardinals' coaching staff. He's still behind Oscar Taveras on the team's outfield depth chart, but Piscotty's overall consistency and knack for hitting left-handed pitching could have him in the majors this season before his highly touted Memphis teammate.

Yankees prospect OF Aaron Judge connected for his first professional home run on Thursday for Low-A Charleston.

He was 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and two walks in the game. Judge, 21, is 6-foot-7, 230 pounds and possesses robust raw power, so it is somewhat surprising it took him 13 games to get in the home-run column. The No. 32 overall pick in last year's draft didn't play after signing last summer due to an injury, so this season represents his first taste of pro ball. Judge has held his own so far, batting .298/.441/.362 with nine runs, seven RBI and a 12/12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He's been especially hot as of late, batting .421 with six runs and all seven RBI during his current five-game hitting streak.

Brandon Phillips left Friday's game against the Cubs with a possible back injury.

Phillips appeared to tweak his lower back on a swing in the first inning. He initially stayed in and even singled on the next pitch he saw, but Ramon Santiago took over for him at second base in the third inning. The Reds should update Phillips' status later Friday.

Diamondbacks prospect RHP Braden Shipley made his season debut Thursday, tossing five scoreless innings for Low-A South Bend.

The 22-year-old allowed five hits and one walk in the outing while striking out four batters. Shipley's start to the season was delayed by a minor case of biceps tendinitis, but he looked great in his Thursday debut. After signing with Arizona was the No. 15 overall pick last June, Shipley posted a 4.99 ERA and 40/14 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 39 2/3 innings between Short-Season Hillsboro and South Bend. The right-hander's is raw compared to most college pitchers, but he possesses the stuff to be a No. 2 starter in the major leagues and could move quickly this season.

Nationals recalled LHP Xavier Cedeno from Triple-A Syracuse.

He'll give the Nats a fresh arm after the bullpen was overused Thursday. Cedeno allowed one run over six relief innings for Washington last season.
Apr 18 - 3:09 PM

Nationals optioned RHP Blake Treinen to Triple-A Syracuse.

He threw 60 pitches over 2 2/3 relief innings Thursday, so the Nationals are bringing in a fresh bullpen arm. Treinen has an interesting arm but still needs to work on his command.
