Cubs OF prospect Billy McKinney tripled and drove in four runs Monday in a win for Double-A Tennessee.
He probably could have done more damage but the game was called in the sixth inning due to rain. The 21-year-old got off to a slow start this year but has picked it up a bit over the last seven games. He's hit .435 during that span while raising his season average from .245 to .264. McKinney hit .300 in 377 at-bats last season between Tennessee and High-A Myrtle Beach. The former first-round pick joined the Cubs organization in 2014 in a trade that sent Jeff Samardzija to Oakland.
Nationals released RHP Taylor Jordan.
Lucas Giolito will take his place on the Nationals' 40-man roster. Jordan underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career back in May and will likely be sidelined until around midseason next year.
Nationals optioned RHP Rafael Martin to Triple-A Syracuse.
The move clears a spot for Lucas Giolito's arrival to the majors. Martin was only up with the Nationals for one day and will return to a 4.29 ERA over 29 appearances in Triple-A.
Padres recalled OF Alex Dickerson from Triple-A El Paso.
He'll replace the injured Jon Jay (forearm) on the active roster. Dickerson has had a monster year in Triple-A, batting .382/.425/.622 with 10 homers over 62 games. Still, we're not expecting much fantasy impact in part-time at-bats in San Diego's outfield.
Phillies RHP prospect Adonis Medina took a no-hitter into the ninth inning Monday in a win for Low-A Williamsport.
Auburn DH Blake Perkins ended Medina's no-hit bid by lacing a single to right field with one out in the ninth inning. The right-hander finished with four strikeouts and one walk while throwing 60 of his 99 pitches for strikes. The 19-year-old has yet to allow a run in three starts this year. The season just started but Medina's 0.57 WHIP is third-lowest in the New York-Penn League.
Padres placed OF Jon Jay on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 20, with a broken right forearm.
Brutal news for Jay, who was hit in the right wrist/forearm area with a pitch on June 19. According to Marty Caswell of 1090 Sports Radio in San Diego, Padres general manager A.J. Preller said that the outfielder is slated to be re-evaluated in three weeks. The 31-year-old was batting .296/.345/.407 through 68 games this season, so he was shaping up to be a nice trade chip for San Diego prior to the injury.
Cardinals designated C Eric Fryer for assignment.
The move clears a spot for Bryan Pena on the active roster. Fryer has played well in sporadic duty with the Cardinals this season, batting .368 (14-for-38) two doubles and five RBI over 24 games.
Cardinals activated C Brayan Peña from the 15-day disabled list.
Pena has been out all season after undergoing surgery in early April to remove loose cartilage from his left knee, but he's finally ready to serve as Yadier Molina's backup. Eric Fryer was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the active roster.
