Marwin Gonzalez (hand) is expected to return Friday against the Angels.

Gonzalez is out of the lineup for the third day in a row, though he's available off the bench if the Astros need him. The 28-year-old utility man has enjoyed a breakout year, hitting .314 with 12 homers and 34 RBI. Gonzalez has started at five different positions this year including left field and all four infield spots.

Justin Verlander (groin) reported no issues after throwing a side session on Thursday.

Verlander left Sunday's start with groin tightness but seems to have weathered the storm. His MRI came back clean and the Tigers are "optimistic" he'll be on the mound Saturday against Boston. Minor league right-hander Drew Ver Hagen will be waiting on stand-by if Verlander can't get the green light.

Joe Musgrove (shoulder) said his bullpen session on Thursday "went well."

He was impressed with his command and reported no discomfort in his shoulder. Musgrove won't start Sunday as expected (David Paulino will get the nod instead) but it looks like there's a good chance of him returning Monday against Texas. If Musgrove needs more time, Francis Martes will start in his place.

Hisashi Iwakuma (shoulder) completed a 50-pitch bullpen session on Thursday.

Next will be a two-inning simulated game on Sunday. It took a bit longer than expected, but it appears Iwakuma has finally turned the corner in his recovery. He's been out with shoulder inflammation since early May.

Cubs transferred LHP Brett Anderson to the 60-day disabled list.

The Cubs needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for right-hander Seth Frankoff. Anderson landed on the DL with a lower back strain last month. We should see him back around the All-Star break.

Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring, quad) has resumed his rehab assignment with High-A St. Lucie.

He's hitting third and starting in left field Thursday at Lakeland. Cespedes suffered a minor setback two weeks ago but seems to have put it behind him. If all goes well, we could see Yo back in New York next week.

Patrick Corbin scattered eight hits and three runs over 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a win over the Padres.

He walked three and struck out eight. Corbin didn’t need to be at his best on Thursday as the Diamondbacks spotted him 15 runs in a stress-free victory. The left-hander ran into trouble during a two-run first inning but kept the damage to a minimum after that. Thursday snapped a two-game losing streak for Corbin, who will try for his sixth victory in his next start Wednesday against Detroit.

Daniel Descalso plated a pair of runs Thursday in the Diamondbacks’ victory over the Padres.

The D’Backs handed San Diego its fifth straight loss with a 15-run explosion on Thursday and Descalso was right in the middle of it. He provided two hits including a solo shot off reliever Kirby Yates in the seventh inning. The home run was his fifth of the season. Descalso has played sparingly this year but has been reasonably productive nonetheless, contributing 19 RBI with a .426 slugging percentage over 101 at-bats.
