 Brian Cushing - LBFeb. 6 - 4:43 pm et
Texans SLB Brian Cushing is a candidate for minor knee surgery this offseason.
A decision will be made in the next couple of weeks. Cushing played through multiple knee injuries, rib fractures, a broken hand, and a broken pinkie in his rookie season. If he has the surgery, Cushing should still be fine for OTAs.

 Matt Schaub - QBFeb. 3 - 6:29 pm et
The Texans are expected to pick up Matt Schaub's $10 million option on Thursday or Friday.
Owner Bob McNair announced his intention to pick up Schaub's option a month ago, and the MVP-winning performance in the Pro Bowl may have accelerated the move. After joining the league's elite quarterbacks in performance this season, Schaub's six-year, $48M deal is outdated.

 Justin Medlock - KFeb. 3 - 2:42 pm et
Toronto Argonauts K Justin Medlock recently worked out for the Falcons and Texans.
Medlock failed to impressive the Chiefs and Rams in earlier stints, but he's drawing NFL interest after nailing 40 of 46 field goals with Toronto. The Texans also worked out journeyman Dave Rayner, signaling that Kris Brown will have competition for his job after an abysmal 2009 season.

 Texans Offense - TMFeb. 2 - 4:51 pm et
The Texans have signed coach Gary Kubiak to a new three-year contract that runs through 2012.
Kubiak actually turned down a fourth year because he wanted to be "on the same path" as his assistants, whose contracts expire in 2012. Though he's yet to turn the Texans into a serious contender, Kubiak (31-33 in four years) has them headed in the right direction for the first time in franchise history. He's rewarded for being in Wild Card contention until the final day of the season, and the team is poised to finally break through in 2010.

 Steve Slaton - RBFeb. 2 - 3:57 pm et
Texans coach Gary Kubiak revealed in an interview with The Score 1510 in Denver that Steve Slaton underwent surgery to repair nerve damage in his neck in mid-January.
Kubiak believes the nerve issue may have been at the root of Slaton's fumbling problems last season. Beat writer John McClain has reported that the injury is not career-threatening, and Slaton is expected to eventually get back to 100 percent. The surgery, however, makes it even less likely that he'll be counted on for the featured back role in 2010. The Texans are expected to make running back a priority on draft day.

 Texans Offense - TMFeb. 1 - 9:35 pm et
Texans owner Bob McNair said late Monday that the team is in serious talks about a contract extension for Gary Kubiak.
"Now we're in the process of working on Gary's extension, and I think probably by next week, we'll have his finalized," McNair said. "His will run at least one year longer than (2012), maybe more." Kubiak is entering his fifth year as Texans head coach and the last year on his old contract. "I think continuity's extremely important in building a strong team," McNair said.

 Matt Schaub - QBFeb. 1 - 8:44 am et
Matt Schaub was named the MVP of the Pro Bowl after leading the AFC to a 41-34 win.
Schaub went 13-of-17 for 189 yards with two touchdowns passes -- one to teammate Andre Johnson and another to Brandon Marshall. After leading the NFL in passing yards and playing in all 16 games in 2009, Schaub will be on everyone's fantasy radar heading into fantasy drafts. He'll deservedly be one of the first five quarterbacks off the board.
 Bernard Pollard - DBJan. 27 - 3:40 pm et
The Texans ranked second in the NFL in run defense after SS Bernard Pollard cracked the starting lineup in Week 4.
They allowed a single 100-yard rusher (Chris Johnson) during that span. Pollard, an impending restricted free agent, was also a turnover-creating machine at strong safety. He's a candidate for a sizable offseason extension.

 Texans Offense - TMJan. 26 - 6:32 pm et
Texans hired former Seahawks offensive coordinator Greg Knapp as quarterbacks coach.
It's a step back for Knapp, who has been a run-heavy offensive coordinator since 2001. With Gary Kubiak's expertise coming in the passing game, the Texans can afford to have both Knapp and new offensive coordinator Rick Dennison steeped in a zone-blocking ground attack. Knapp does have a history with Matt Schaub, working with him for three years in Atlanta as offensive coordinator.

 Glover Quin - DBJan. 25 - 2:20 pm et
Texans coach Gary Kubiak says he believes LCB Glover Quin would've been in the conversation for 2009 Rookie of the Year accolades had he not been on the same team as Brian Cushing.
Bypassing far more highly-paid Jacques Reeves, Quin was a starter from Week 4 on and finished with 11 pass breakups to go with 68 tackles. Quin's emergence gives the team some leverage in talks with free agent Dunta Robinson. No matter Robinson's status, Quin is likely to start again in 2010.

 Zach Diles - LBJan. 24 - 8:13 pm et
Texans WLB Zach Diles led the team in tackles for loss with 7.5 during the regular season.
Pro Bowlers Brian Cushing and DeMeco Ryans each had seven. Diles is the least-known of Houston's stud-laden linebacker corps, but had a solid season on the weak side. He'll likely keep Xavier Adibi on the bench in 2010.

 Brian Cushing - LBJan. 22 - 1:05 pm et
Texans SLB Brian Cushing has pulled out of the Pro Bowl due to lingering injuries regular season injuries.
Cushing played through finger, knee, foot, and rib injuries during the year, never missing a game. He was not mentioned among the Texans' offseason surgery candidates. The Defensive Rookie of the Year will be fine for OTAs.

 Deltha O'Neal - DBJan. 21 - 5:30 pm et
Veteran CB Deltha O'Neal worked out for the Colts Thursday.
Jerraud Powers is nursing a foot injury, so the Colts may be looking for a veteran who could provide serviceable depth in an emergency situation.

 Steve Slaton - RBJan. 21 - 10:59 am et
Beat writer John McClain believes the Texans' biggest draft need this offseason is a "running back they can count on."
"A back who'll be durable and dependable and not have health issues or fumble issues or both," continues McClain. The Texans clearly can't count on Steve Slaton to carry the load after his disappointing season, and Arian Foster's strong finish doesn't equate to "dependable." Georgia Tech's Jonathan Dwyer is a possibility for Houston.

 James Casey - TEJan. 19 - 9:29 am et
Texans coach Gary Kubiak says the goal for James Casey this offseason and going forward is to have him focus on one position.
Casey shuttled between fullback, tight end, H-back, and slot receiver in his first season, during which he managed just six catches all year. Focusing on one position would be nice, but there's little hope in fantasy for the Rice alum with Owen Daniels (ACL surgery) likely to be close to 100% by Week 1.

 Kevin Walter - WRJan. 13 - 3:23 pm et
Kevin Walter will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, no matter if the players and owners agree to a new CBA.
Walter has six years of NFL service, so he'll be free to sign with the highest bidder. The 28-year-old finished a disappointing 2009 with an 11.5 yards-per-catch average and two touchdowns, both lows since 2006. Considering Gary Kubiak's endorsement of Jacoby Jones as a possible future starter, Walter probably won't be re-signed. The Texans could transition tag him. With no CBA, each team has two transition tags and two franchise tags to use.

 Chris Brown - RBJan. 13 - 11:15 am et
Texans beat writer John McClain doesn't see Chris Brown back with the Texans.
Neither do we. The Texans will make running back a top priority in the offseason and there will be no room for a plodding veteran like Brown with Arian Foster and Steve Slaton on the roster.

 Rex Grossman - QBJan. 13 - 11:12 am et
Texans beat writer John McClain speculates that Rex Grossman won't be back with the Texans next season.
Dan Orlovsky is expected to be Matt Schaub's backup in 2010. Grossman will try to find work as a No. 2 man elsewhere, but he will struggle. 30 before next season, Grossman looked incredibly unprepared in spot action this past year.

 Antoine Caldwell - CJan. 13 - 11:10 am et
Texans beat writer John McClain thinks that Antoine Caldwell will start at right guard next season.
Caldwell can play both center and guard and was the Texans' third-round pick last year. Chris White would go into a reserve role.

 Texans Offense - TMJan. 12 - 6:42 pm et
Former Broncos OL coach Rick Dennison has accepted the Texans' offensive coordinator position.
Gary Kubiak's best friend has big shoes to fill after Kyle Shanahan's offense set team records in points and total yards. An assistant with the Broncos for 15 years, Dennison was a constant in Denver's strong running game. He's expected to improve the Texans' struggling ground attack while having some influence on play-calling. Since Dennison has little experience with the passing game, Kubiak could resume a hands-on role in that capacity.
