 David Wright-3B- Mets Sep. 30 - 4:36 pm et

David Wright went 1-for-5 in the Mets' season-ending defeat Sunday against the Marlins.
The Mets' collapse will probably cost Wright the MVP award. He still had a terrific season, hitting .325/.416/.546, and he was at his best in the second half. In fact, all 30 of his homers came after the end of April.
 Jose Reyes-SS- Mets Sep. 30 - 4:34 pm et

Jose Reyes went 0-for-5 and heard a lot of boos as the Mets lost Sunday.
So much for Baseball's Most Exciting Player. Things got bad for Reyes after he failed to hustle on a grounder yesterday that he thought was going foul. He hit .205 in September and was even caught on four of his nine steal attempts. He was still an asset during the middle four months of the season, but in truth, he was quite a disappointment after his huge April.
 Jeff Conine-1B- Mets Sep. 30 - 4:31 pm et

Jeff Conine took over when Carlos Delgado was injured Sunday and went 0-for-2 with a walk in what was likely the final game of his career.
Mr. Marlin appears to have his heart set on retirement. He finished with a .254/.317/.383 line in 256 at-bats this season. The 41-year-old is a career .285/.347/.443 hitter with 215 homers and 1,071 RBI.
 Lance Berkman-1B- Astros Sep. 30 - 4:28 pm et

The Astros announced that Triple-A Round Rock manager Jackie Moore will take over as bench coach and Dewey Robinson, the director of pitching development, will take over as pitching coach.
Current pitching coach Dave Wallace will take over a different role for the team. Mark Bailey, who was Houston's bullpen coach before replacing Cecil Cooper as the bench coach, and third-base coach Doug Mansolino are expected to depart.
 Carlos Pena-1B- Rays Sep. 30 - 4:26 pm et

Carlos Pena delivered his 46th homer, a single and a walk Sunday in the Rays' 8-5 win in Toronto.
The Rays finished with the worst record in baseball again at 66-96. It will be interesting to see if that leads them to go with Pedro Alvarez, the consensus No. 1 pick, in next year's draft when they already have a long-term third baseman in Evan Longoria. There should be a way to make room for both. Pena finishes with 13 homers in September and 46 overall. It's the greatest season ever for a Rays player, and he deserves to be listed on MVP ballots for his performance.
 Jason Hammel-S- Rockies Sep. 30 - 4:21 pm et

Jason Hammel yielded four runs in five innings Sunday in a win over Toronto.
It was just Hammel's second win in 14 starts. He ended up having a solid September, posting a 4.09 ERA and a 27/9 K/BB ratio. Overall, he was 3-5 with a 6.14 ERA. He'll have to compete for a rotation spot next spring.
 A.J. Burnett-S- Yankees Sep. 30 - 4:19 pm et

A.J. Burnett was roughed up by the Rays on Sunday, allowing seven runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss.
Burnett faded in his last two starts after throwing 124 pitches against the Red Sox on Sept. 18. We doubt it's a coincidence based on his history. The Jays need to manager Burnett better next year in order to get the most out of him. He's been limited to 46 starts in his first two years in Toronto.
 Joey Votto-1B- Reds Sep. 30 - 4:10 pm et

Joey Votto powered the Reds to a win over the Cubs with a three-run homer and a two-run double on Sunday.
Votto slumped a bit as September wore on, but he made one more statement today as he tries to shove Scott Hatteberg aside as take over the Reds' starting first baseman in 2008. He hit .321/.360/.548 with four homers and 17 RBI in 84 at-bats.
 Homer Bailey-S- Reds Sep. 30 - 4:07 pm et

Homer Bailey surrendered four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings Sunday versus the Cubs.
Bailey wasn't involved in the decision, so he finishes 3-2 with a 5.76 ERA in nine starts. The subpar performance should serve to keep his price down in NL-only leagues next year. He doesn't quite seem ready for prime time yet, but he could be a force by the time July or August rolls around next year.
 Ted Lilly-S- Cubs Sep. 30 - 4:05 pm et

Ted Lilly was perfect for two innings in his start Sunday versus the Reds.
A tuneup for his start in Game 2 of the NLDS. Lilly threw 21 pitches, 15 of them strikes.
 Jason Marquis-S- Nationals Sep. 30 - 4:04 pm et

Jason Marquis gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning of relief Sunday versus the Reds.
The Cubs were considering starting Marquis in Game 4 of the NLDS, but they could bring Carlos Zambrano back on short rest instead. If that's what they decide, Marquis could be left off the roster.
 Alfonso Soriano-OF- Cubs Sep. 30 - 4:02 pm et

Alfonso Soriano hit his seventh leadoff homer in September and finished with three hits and three RBI on September.
Soriano was the first player ever to hit six leadoff homers in a month. The homer also broke Ernie Banks' club record for September homers with 14. Soriano was removed after his third at-bat today, preventing him from getting a chance to finish with a .300 average. He's at .299.
 Luke Hochevar-S- Royals Sep. 30 - 3:20 pm et

Luke Hochevar pitched three innings and gave up two runs Sunday against the Indians in his first big-league start.
Hochevar was removed after 51 pitches, as the Royals didn't want to take any chances with him after he had been used as a reliever all month. Hochevar looked like an extreme long shot to go into 2008 with a rotation spot after the conclusion of the minor league season. He could be a realistic candidate now after posting a 2.13 ERA in 12 2/3 innings. Still, some more time in Triple-A would probably be for the best.
 Carlos Ruiz-C- Phillies Sep. 30 - 3:17 pm et

Carlos Ruiz left Sunday's game in the fifth inning with a left elbow injury.
Chris Coste replaced Ruiz, who was hit by a pitch.
 Nick Markakis-OF- Orioles Sep. 30 - 3:16 pm et

Orioles fired bench coach Tom Trebelhorn and first-base coach Sam Mejias.
The Orioles do plan to retain pitching coach Leo Mazzone, who said he hopes to stay in Baltimore after his contract expires in a year. Trebelhorn, a former Brewers and Cubs manager, might be finished coaching at age 60.
 Jack Wilson-SS- Mariners Sep. 30 - 3:14 pm et

Jack Wilson was released from a hospital Sunday after being observed overnight for a concussion sustained during a head-on collision with teammate Matt Kata.
Wilson was well enough Sunday that he was cleared to fly home following the Pirates' season-ending game against St. Louis.
 Carlos Delgado-1B- Mets Sep. 30 - 3:13 pm et

X-rays revealed that Carlos Delgado suffered a fractured left hand when he was hit by a Dontrelle Willis pitch on Sunday.
It figures that the Mets will be without Delgado if they still manage to make it to the postseason. Shawn Green and Jeff Conine would play first base, with Lastings Milledge seeing a lot of time in right field.
 Tom Glavine-S- Braves Sep. 30 - 2:02 pm et

Tom Glavine was lit up for seven runs in one-third of an inning by the Marlins in Sunday's finale.
A disaster. Glavine allowed five hits, walked two and hit Dontrelle Willis with a pitch before Jorge Sosa replaced him. The outing took his ERA up to 4.45, but that's probably of no importance to Glavine right now. If this is it for the Mets, it's hard to imagine Glavine would want to go out like this.
 Carlos Delgado-1B- Mets Sep. 30 - 1:58 pm et

Carlos Delgado left Sunday's game after one inning with a hand injury.
Delgado was hit by a Dontrelle Willis pitch that he was trying to swing at. He ended up going around, yet he was awarded first base anyway. He stayed in to run, but Jeff Conine replaced him to begin the second.
 B.J. Upton-OF- Rays Sep. 30 - 1:42 pm et

B.J. Upton is sitting out Sunday's game in order to maintain his .300 average.
We'll just pretend he's really doing it to maintain his 900 OPS. Assuming that he doesn't make a pinch-hitting appearance, Upton finishes the year at .302/.389/.513 with 24 homers in 472 at-bats. He's adapted well to center field and he should only get better out there, so it looks like he's going to be a star after all.
