 Mariano Rivera-R- Yankees Sep. 25 - 7:33 pm et

Since he wasn't going to be used for what would have been the fourth time in six days, Mariano Rivera returned to New York on Thursday for end-of-season medical tests.
Rivera will be available to close on Friday. He didn't complain of any specific medical issues before leaving. "When I asked him Tuesday if he was OK, he said his whole body was a little cranky because he’d thrown three days in a row," manager Joe Girardi said. "This is nothing new. Mo’s been cranky at 37, cranky at 36, but when you need Mo, he’s there for you."
 Greg Maddux-S- Dodgers Sep. 25 - 7:30 pm et

Greg Maddux was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday with the Dodgers having clinched the NL West.
He's wiped out from having thrown 68 and 61 pitches in his last two starts. Eric Stults will pitch in his place against the Padres. We're guessing that Maddux will pitch at some point during the weekend. He's currently at 354 career wins in what could be his final season.
 Ryan Dempster-S- Cubs Sep. 25 - 7:27 pm et

Cubs manager Lou Piniella confirmed Thursday that Ryan Dempster would start Game 1 of the NLDS.
It's still unclear whether he'll be facing the Dodgers, Phillies or Mets. Rich Harden, Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly are expected to follow Dempster in the rotation, but that's yet to be confirmed.
 Albert Pujols-1B- Cardinals Sep. 25 - 5:58 pm et

Albert Pujols went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, a double and a sac fly as the Cardinals eliminated the Diamondbacks by winning 12-3 on Thursday.
The Dodgers are the NL West champions. Pujols, who received a rare day off on Wednesday, hit his 35th homer today and upped his RBI total to 112. He also scored twice, giving him 97 runs on the season. He'll need one per game this weekend in order to reach the century mark for the seventh time in eight major league seasons. Considering that he has a .458 OBP, he really should be there already.
 Joel Pineiro-S- Cardinals Sep. 25 - 5:54 pm et

Joel Pineiro held the Diamondbacks to three runs and three hits over seven innings in a win Thursday.
The win was his first since Aug. 16. Pineiro finishes the first season of his two-year, $13 million contract at 7-7 with a 5.15 ERA. The Cardinals seemed to lose most of their faith in him during the second half and could seek to deal him this winter.
 Doug Davis-S- Diamondbacks Sep. 25 - 5:52 pm et

Doug Davis allowed three runs on seven hits and five walks over four innings Thursday against the Cardinals.
Davis had turned in seven straight solid starts to lower his ERA from 4.79 to 4.25. This one wasn't impressive at all, but by minimizing the damage, he managed to end the year at 6-8 with a 4.32 ERA in 26 starts. He's signed for another $8.75 million next year, so he'll probably be back as the Diamondbacks' fourth or fifth starter.
 Mark Reynolds-3B- Diamondbacks Sep. 25 - 5:49 pm et

Mark Reynolds set a major league record with his 200th strikeout Thursday against the Cardinals.
Reynolds, who broke Ryan Howard's mark from last season, later added No. 201 for good measure. He did have a two-run single in his other at-bat, giving him 96 RBI for the season.
 Adam Dunn-OF- Nationals Sep. 25 - 5:48 pm et

Adam Dunn had a solo homer, a walk and a second run scored Thursday against the Cardinals.
Dunn, who didn't hit with a single man on base today, is now just one long ball away from a fifth straight 40-homer season.
Vernon Wells-OF- Blue Jays Sep. 25 - 5:10 pm et

Blue Jays agreed to terms with manager Cito Gaston on a two-year contract through 2010.
The Jays are 48-36 since Gaston took over for John Gibbons. The switch has proven to be a clear upgrade, but that's hardly saying much. Gaston certainly hasn't done anything revolutionary since taking over, and he'll probably do little more than maintain the status quo going forward. Still, the players respect him and he doesn't made bunchloads of baffling moves. Going forward with him isn't a bad move.
 John Maine-S- Mets Sep. 25 - 5:04 pm et

Mets manager Jerry Manuel said he's made the decision not to use John Maine for the rest of the season.
Doctors have cleared him and upper management activated him from the disabled list, yet Manuel seems to be taking it upon himself not to pitch Maine. The idea that it should be his decision to make is simply ludicrous. But, then again, it's not like the Mets need bullpen help.
 Ramon Santiago-SS- Tigers Sep. 25 - 4:30 pm et

Ramon Santiago went 3-for-4 and homered twice off Scott Kazmir as the Tigers topped the Rays 7-5 on Thursday.
While Santiago entered with just one homer in 109 at-bats this season, he actually sported a .284/.409/.404 line while serving as Edgar Renteria's backup. His career OPS is still under 650, but he remains a fine defender at shortstop and the Tigers just might consider giving him Renteria's job next year. It'd be incredible to see him turn into a solid regular five years after the Tigers dealt him to the Mariners for Carlos Guillen, a trade that ranks as one of the best of the decade.
 Armando Galarraga-S- Tigers Sep. 25 - 4:25 pm et

Armando Galarraga yielded five runs over 7 2/3 innings in a defeat of the Rays on Thursday.
Galarraga allowed one run through six, but he gave up a solo homer to Evan Longoria in the seventh and then a three-run blast to Ben Zobrist before being removed in the eighth. Galarraga ends the year 13-6 with a 3.68 ERA. If the Tigers hadn't been such a disappointment, he'd probably have gotten more attention as a Rookie of the Year candidate. The lack of run support of late -- none of his previous three quality starts had resulted in victories -- will see to it that he's an also-ran.
 Scott Kazmir-S- Angels Sep. 25 - 4:21 pm et

Scott Kazmir yielded four runs in five innings Thursday to take a loss to the Tigers.
Fortunately, he won't be facing hitters the caliber of Ramon Santiago in the playoffs. Kazmir ends the regular season 12-8 with a 3.49 ERA. His WHIP has come down significantly from last year, but while he's allowing fewer singles, he's giving up more homers and still walking too many batters. The lack of efficiency has resulted in him working more than six innings in a start just once in the last 3 1/2 months (seven innings against an awful Oakland offense on July 21). Of course, he can still shut down any offense when he's on. Still, we'd rate him as the Rays' No. 3 starter behind James Shields and Matt Garza right now.
 Ben Zobrist-2B- Rays Sep. 25 - 4:16 pm et

Ben Zobrist hit his ninth and 10th homer of the season off the Tigers' Armando Galarraga on Thursday.
Zobrist looked like he'd become a pretty useful player while climbing through the Astros system, but he was a complete bust in 280 at-bats with Tampa Bay between 2006 and 2007. Back using the same kind of approach he did in the minors, he's been a nice surprise while hitting .241/.333/.471 in 187 at-bats this year. A switch-hitter capable of playing all over the field, he's now in good position to put together a Geoff Blum-type career or maybe something more.
 Ichiro Suzuki-OF- Mariners Sep. 25 - 1:28 pm et

An anonymous clubhouse insider told the Seattle Times that Mariners teammates were so annoyed with Ichiro Suzuki earlier this season that they considered beating him up.
"I just can't believe the number of guys who really dislike him," said the insider. "It got to a point early on when I thought they were going to get together and go after him." The coaching staff and then-manager John McLaren intervened when one player was overheard talking about wanting to "knock him out." Perhaps the goal would have been to knock him around like the rest of the league has done to Carlos Silva this year, but given Mariners' hitters reputations, it's likely that the team could land several blows and still not do any damage. It's not as though Richie Sexson had a chance of making contact.
 Troy Percival-R- Rays Sep. 25 - 11:22 am et

Troy Percival (back) admitted Wednesday that the Rays may have "a tough decision" on whether or not to include him on the postseason roster.
Ongoing back problems and two recent epidural injections make Percival a question mark. "Health-wise, I think I'll be fine," Percival said. "It's up to them on what they want to do to give them the best opportunity to win."
 Jeremy Guthrie-S- Orioles Sep. 25 - 11:04 am et

Jeremy Guthrie (shoulder) threw a 53-pitch simulated game Wednesday and will start the Orioles' season finale Sunday.
It's unclear why exactly the Orioles need to get Guthrie one more start given that he hasn't pitched since August 29 because of shoulder fatigue, but he'll try to even his record at 11-11 against the Blue Jays anyway.
Scott Downs-R- Blue Jays Sep. 25 - 10:48 am et

Scott Downs has been shut down for the season with an ankle injury.
Downs has been considered day-to-day since re-injuring his ankle two weeks ago. He finishes a career-best season with a 1.78 ERA and 57/27 K/BB ratio in 70 2/3 innings.
 Tom Gorzelanny-R- Cubs Sep. 25 - 10:29 am et

Pirates placed LHP Tom Gorzelanny on the 60-day disabled list.
Gorzelanny was shut down for the season with a finger injury two weeks ago and the move clears a 40-man roster spot for first-round pick Pedro Alvarez.
 Ryan Hanigan-C- Reds Sep. 25 - 10:27 am et

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Ryan Hanigan "may get a chance at the No. 1 catching job for next year."
Hanigan is a career .296/.375/.378 hitter in 125 games at Triple-A and is batting .266/.363/.367 through 91 plate appearances with the Reds. He draws enough walks to be a decent source of on-base percentage, but possessing almost zero power gives him little fantasy potential.
