Brewers re-signed INF Craig Counsell to a one-year, $2.1 million contract.
The deal includes $500,000 in possible playing-time incentives. Counsell did not receive the two-year deal he was seeking. The 39-year old infielder had a great 2009, batting .285/.357/.408 in 404 at-bats. With Rickie Weeks (wrist) expected to be ready for spring training, Counsell will likely return to being a backup infielder in Milwaukee.

 Craig Counsell-2B - Brewers Dec. 13 - 9:10 am et

Brewers GM Doug Melvin confirmed to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that he has a tentative agreement in place to bring back Craig Counsell.
Counsell was seeking a two-year deal, so it will be interesting to see if Melvin caved. The 39-year old infielder had a great season, batting .285/.357/.408 in 404 at-bats last year. The deal should be finalized Monday.

Craig Counsell's agent Barry Meister said his client hopes to make a decision on his future by Monday.
"I think we're getting close," said Meister. "I hope one way or another, whether it's with the Brewers or another team, that we'll have something by Monday." The Reds have also shown interest in the 39-year-old infielder, but the Brewers are optimistic about retaining the Milwaukee-native. Counsell batted 285/.357/.408 with four homers, 31 RBI and 61 runs scored in '09. With Rickie Weeks (wrist) expected to be ready for spring training, Counsell would likely return to being a backup infielder should he return to Milwaukee.

According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, the Brewers sweetened their offer for free agent infielder Craig Counsell on Thursday morning.
"I'm confident we'll get it done," said general manager Doug Melvin. "Craig is a big part of our organization, a big part of our city. I'd like to have him back." Melvin wouldn't say if they offered him anything beyond a one-year deal, but he is optimistic about their chances to retain the 39-year-old infielder. Counsell batted 285/.357/.408 with four homers and 31 RBI in 2009.

 Craig Counsell-2B - Brewers Dec. 9 - 8:37 pm et

Craig Counsell's agent, Barry Meister, said he had a good meeting with Brewers management on Wednesday.
Counsell is seeking a multi-year contract, but it's not yet clear if the Brewers are ready to give him more than a one-year offer. Counsell, who turns 40 next August, was impressive in 2009, batting .285/.357/.408 with four homers, 31 RBI and 61 runs scored.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said the club has interest in free agent infielder Craig Counsell.
Counsell is seeking a multi-year contract this winter, so it's hard to believe he'll get it from the Reds. Counsell, who turns 40 next August, was impressive in 2009, batting .285/.357/.408 with four homers, 31 RBI and 61 runs scored, all the while shouldering his biggest workload since 2005. He'll be valuable somewhere, but most likely with a contender.
