| Mat Gamel's 2009 Profile | | Few players had as good a first three months as Gamel, as he hit.383 with 15 homers, 28 doubles, and 6 triples in 332 Double-A at-bats to start the year. However, he cratered in the second half by hitting just .229, with 13 extra-base hits in two months. The slump then affected his plate discipline, as Gamel began to chase more pitches, which made it more difficult for him to snap out of it. Despite the second half swoon, Gamel is a natural .300 hitter, with a stroke more suitable for doubles than homers at the big league level. Gamel’s biggest problem is his defense, as his 30 errors in 126 games actually qualify as an improvement, given his 2007 totals of 53 in 113 contests. If his defense improves, Gamel could take over at third base as early as mid-season. If not, he’ll have to move to the outfield. It would then take a trade of Corey Hart, or a trade of Gamel himself, to find playing time. It’s likely that one of the three will happen; therefore, Gamel is a good bet for fantasy value in 2010.Updated Jul. 8: Mat Gamel hit his first homer in nearly a month against the Cardinals on Wednesday night. Gamel has just eight at-bats this month, so a trip back to Triple-A Nashville wouldn't be the worst thing for him.
