Giants recalled infielder Matt Downs from Triple-A Fresno.
Downs will step right into the starting lineup, batting seventh against Derek Lowe and playing second base. Downs put up a .294/.339/.476 line with eight homers and 50 RBI for Fresno, but he was just 7-for-36 (.194) with a homer and two RBI after being promoted by the Giants last month. The fact that he is in the starting lineup only underscores the point that the Giants need an upgrade at the position.

Downs was batting .288 with six home runs and 38 RBI in 54 games for Fresno, prompting his promotion to the big leagues in mid-June. He failed to make an impact on the big league level, however, posting a .194/.302/.306 batting line, two extra-base hits and two RBI in 36 at-bats.
