Astros ressigned RHP Jose Capellan, OF Reggie Abercrombie and C Lou Santangelo to minor league camp.
Capellan couldn't beat out Russ Ortiz for a rotation spot, and there was no room for him in the pen. Abercrombie clearly outplayed Jason Michaels this spring, and he's the more useful of the two defensively and on the basepaths. Still, that doesn't make up for being the one without a guaranteed contract.

Jose Capellan yielded five runs in five innings Saturday in a loss to the Nationals.
Capellan needed a very strong outing today if he was going to have any chance of overtaking Russ Ortiz for a spot in Houston's rotation. Barring a late injury -- something that can hardly be ruled out on a team counting on Mike Hampton -- he's probably not going to have a roster spot.

Despite giving up five runs in five innings, Jose Capellan picked up a win over the Blue Jays on Saturday.
Run support! The Astros have picked up their second and third wins of the spring the last two days. Unfortunately for Capellan, Russ Ortiz went six scoreless in his victory Friday. Capellan had the much tougher assignment, as he was facing a Jays lineup that included six regulars (Ortiz got a Reds lineup completely full of backups and minor leaguers), but his chances of winning a rotation spot were likely hurt anyway.

Jose Capellan blanked the Braves for 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision Sunday.
He allowed four hits, walked none and struck out four. Capellan only figured to be in the mix for a bullpen spot, but he's now a possibility for the rotation with Brandon Backe hurt. He's yet to allow a run in 9 2/3 innings.
