| Mark Mulder's 2009 Profile | | It may pale in comparison to the Jason Schmidt debacle, but the Cardinals just finishing paying Mark Mulder $13 million to pitch 12 2/3 innings and give up 17 earned runs over the last two years. He underwent his first shoulder surgery in Sept. 2006, so they knew exactly what they were getting themselves into. With his velocity well down, Mulder hasn’t looked anything like a major league pitcher since May 2006. Following a second surgery in 2007, he made one major league start last season, that lasting 16 pitches. No further surgery was required, so he’ll likely be put on a regular schedule as he attempts his next comeback this year. Still, he’s a real long shot to reemerge as a useful starter.Updated Feb. 23: Free agent Mark Mulder could be close to holding an open bullpen session for interested teams. The A's are one team that has their eye on Mulder, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. With a mostly-untested rotaton, Oakland could be interested in bringing back the veteran lefty if he shows he's healthy. "I'd love to be out there, but what I was doing the last couple of years wasn't fair to me and it wasn't fair to the Cardinals, and I'm not going to do that to another team," Mulder told The Chronicle.
