49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco says Brandon Jones will have to "earn his role on the team - and his salary for 2010 - with a solid offseason and training camp."
Jones did not earn his five-year, $16.5 million contract in 2009. He caught one pass all year and was barely active despite getting over his shoulder injury in the middle part of the season. Even if he wins the No. 3 receiver job, Jones won't be on the fantasy radar.

Brandon Jones caught just one pass for 18 yards in his first season with the 49ers.
Jones was inactive for much of the year, including the finale against the Rams. He is signed through 2013 and appears to be part of the long-term future. Either Jones or Jason Hill will be the team's No. 3 receiver next season.

49ers declared WR Brandon Jones, CB Nate Clements, LT Joe Staley, K Joe Nedney, LB Diyral Briggs, C Cody Wallace, DT Derek Walker inactive for Sunday's game in St. Louis.
Nate Davis is the third quarterback. Barry Sims starts for Joe Staley (knee). K Shane Andrus gets a one-game tryout for the Niners with Nedney out.

49ers coach Mike Singletary suggested that Brandon Jones will get more playing time as a wide receiver down the stretch.
Singletary said that Jones is one of the players that the coaches want to see "exactly what he can and cannot do." Jones is signed through 2013 and appears to be part of the long-term plans even though he's splitting time with Jason Hill as the No. 3 receiver right now.

Brandon Jones recorded his first catch of the season in the Week 13 loss to the Seahawks.
Jones is splitting time as the No. 3 receiver with Jason Hill. He's also returning punts, but we can confidently say that he wasn't worth the five-year, $16.5 million contract he signed last offseason.

49ers WR Brandon Jones didn't play a single offensive snap in Week 12.
The 49ers gave a $16.5 million contract this offseason to a player that only returns punts, and doesn't even do that well. Jones has zero receptions on the season. He's accumulated 26 punt return yards in six appearances.
