Gary Woodland has decided to call it a season to have surgery to repair the rotator cuff in his left shoulder.
Woodland has dealt with the inflammation in his shoulder since March and opted to play through it, but, like most in recent memory with a similar ailment, he has failed to perform. "It’s been evident over the last four months that I get tired over the weekend," Woodland said. "I just don’t have the strength and the shoulder to play four days in a row ... It’s been a long disappointing year. I felt like I was playing well going in and it just seems like it’s been one thing after another. I’ve been playing at 50 percent for too long." Dr. James Andrews will perform the procedure. Woodland will likely get nine starts on a Major Medical extension (Q School/Nationwide Tour category) to earn about $750K in 2010.

Hoggard added that Woodland has had two cortizone shots over the last three months to help play through the injury. The rookie's best finish in 14 starts is a T-28 at the Mayakoba.

Gary Woodland carded the low third round of the Mayakoba, when he posted a 7-under-par 63.
It's been a slow start to the season, with only two made cuts in five tournaments, but on Saturday he carded nine birdies, with two bogeys and moved up from 59th to 12th place. This is the last week before the reshuffle, so a good finish this week could help him get into tournaments for the rest of the season.
