Mariners signed Erik Bedard to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with an $8 million mutual option for 2011.
He could make up to $8.5 million with incentives. The left-hander posted a 2.82 ERA in 15 starts for the Mariners in 2009, but missed most of the second half of the season with shoulder problems, eventually undergoing season-ending surgery in August. He likely won't be a significant factor until mid-season.

Erik Bedard's incentive-laden deal could pay over $7.5 million, Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman reports.
The $7.5 million figure is what the 30-year-old made in 2009, a season cut short by injury. The left-hander is expected to sign a one-year deal worth a minimum of $1.5 million with the Mariners after undergoing a physical. Even if Bedard hits all incentives, Seattle will get plenty of value to make the signing worth the money.

According to John Hickey of AOL Fanhouse, Erik Bedard is on his way to Seattle for a physical.
It might not be the formality that comes along with most signings, however it is the only thing standing in the way of him returning to Seattle. Bedard has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract with some additional incentives. He's expected to miss the first two months of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery last August.

Erik Bedard told French-language newspaper Le Droit on Thursday that his one-year deal with the Mariners is worth $1.5 million.
The contract also includes some incentives, though it's not exactly clear yet how much those will be worth. "I'm really happy. It was my first choice to return to Seattle," Bedard told the Ontario-based paper. "I think the team will be very good this season." The 30-year-old lefty was 5-3 with an impressive 2.82 ERA in 15 starts for the Mariners in '09, but he missed nearly the entire second half of the season with shoulder problems.

A source tells Jon Paul Morosi that free agent left-hander Erik Bedard is close to a one-year contract with the Mariners.
If anything, it jives with Jim Street's report from earlier today, though nothing appears to final quite yet, as he would have to take part in a physical examination. Bedard underwent shoulder surgery last August and isn't expected to contribute in the majors until May at the earliest.

Erik Bedard told Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune that he would love to return to Seattle.
"I'd love it - put me down as No. 3B, because Ryan (Rowland-Smith) could be No. 3, he's ready," said Bedard. "I'd love to be back in Seattle." Bedard said he hasn't received a concrete offer, but there were rumblings early Thursday that he has agreed to a one-year, incentive-laden contract with the Mariners. Bedard, who underwent shoulder surgery last August, isn't firm on a return date to the mound, but could see himself pitching in May.

According to Jim Street of MLB.com, the Mariners are close to re-signing free agent left-hander Erik Bedard.
Street's description is somewhat vague, suggesting that a deal might already be in place. He writes that it is a one-year, $1.5 million base salary with a "shipload" of incentives. Bedard, 30, underwent shoulder surgery last August and is expected to miss the first few months of the season, though there is nothing confirmed on that end. The Mariners are still shouldering his medicals bills and have kept close tabs on his progress. According to Kirby Arnold of the Everett Herald, who was linked in the piece by Street, Bedard is expected to begin a throwing program in Arizona shortly.

Jim Street of MLB.com hears that the Mariners might re-sign free agent left-hander Erik Bedard.
But they won't count on him to contribute anytime soon. Bedard, who underwent left shoulder surgery last August, is expected to miss the first few months of the season. The Mariners are still paying Bedard's medical bills and are keeping close tabs on his rehab. The 30-year-old southpaw made just 30 starts over the past two seasons due to injury, but is still very effective when healthy. Depending on the type of guaranteed money he is seeking, it could be a high-reward signing.

Mariners head trainer Rick Griffin hinted Thursday that free agent Erik Bedard (shoulder) might not be ready to pitch for another three-to-five months.
Bedard underwent exploratory surgery on his left shoulder in August that revealed a torn labrum and inflamed bursa. According to Griffin, he was given a 10-to-12 month recovery timeline and it has only been seven. In other words, he might be ready by late April, but chances are he'll be out until May. No wonder he's drawn such little interest on the open market this winter.

Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals are still looking into free agent left-hander Erik Bedard.
With Ben Sheets now in Oakland, Bedard represents the next best option among the high-risk, high-reward types. The 30-year-old southpaw was 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 15 starts with the Mariners in '09, but missed nearly the entire second half of the season with shoulder problems, eventually undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum and inflamed bursa. It's not known when he'll be able to contribute this season. The Orioles remain the most likely landing spot.

Orioles GM Andy MacPhail believes Erik Bedard is not close to a decision on where to pitch in 2010.
"[Bedard] sort of told us from the get-go that this wouldn't be an early decision, that this was something that probably would move closer to the reporting date in spring training," said MacPhail. The 30 year old was 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 15 games for the Mariners this past year while battling injuries. The Orioles and Royals are thought to be the top contenders for his services.

Andy MacPhail believes free agent left-hander Erik Bedard will be able to pitch "sooner as opposed to later."
"I think they've always thought this was going to be a late-January type deal anyway, if that," said MacPhail, who has maintained interest in the former Oriole. "Like any free-agent signing, whether it would be Erik or anybody, they'd have to take a physical before so we could try to get a sense. I think our guys feel like, based on medical stuff they've seen so far, it's sooner as opposed to later."

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail confirmed Monday that he's interested in bringing back free agent Erik Bedard.
The O's have asked for Bedard's medical records and view him as an inexpensive, albeit high-risk, signing. The 30-year-old left-hander has struggled with injuries since leaving Baltimore but he was 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 15 games with the Mariners this season when healthy.

Royals assistant general manager J.J. Picollo clarified the club's stance on free agent starter Erik Bedard, calling a previous Yahoo! Sports report that said the Royals were "going hard" after the left-hander "probably an overstatement."
"He's certainly a name we've talked about and will continue to talk about, but I think that's probably an overstatement," Picollo said. "Right now there's a free-agent pool out there and we're looking into every one of those guys. And with Erik being left-handed it stands out a little bit more." Bedard missed the second half of last season after undergoing shoulder surgery, but he was 5-3 with a 2.82 ERA in 15 games with the Mariners when healthy. "I think there's a lot of research that has to go into Erik before we get to that stage because of his past injuries and he's coming off another one this year," Picollo said.

The Royals are "going hard" after Erik Bedard, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports.
Baltimore is another destination linked to Bedard, who is likely to sign a one-year deal with incentives as he makes his way back from shoulder troubles. He is fast becoming one of the more coveted starters on the free agent market.

Jeff Zrebiec and Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun report that if Erik Bedard is healthy, the Orioles "would like nothing more" than to bring him back to Baltimore.
We're a little skeptical of this, as Baltimore was none too pleased with Bedard's attitude before shipping him out to Seattle. That said, Baltimore is in need of quality pitchers, and they're targeting the right category in high-upside pitchers who aren't married to signing with contending teams. The left-hander is thought to be out through April of 2010 as he recovers from a torn labrum and inflamed bursa.

Mariners transferred LHP Erik Bedard from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Bedard is out for the rest of the season and likely the first month of 2010 as he recovers from a torn labrum and inflamed bursa. The Bedard trade has been nothing but a disaster for Seattle since the day the trade was made.

Impending free agent Erik Bedard indicated Saturday evening that he'd like to return to Seattle next season.
It might be his only option. Bedard underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum and inflamed bursa and is expected to miss the first month of the regular season. Teams aren't likely to take a chance on him, just as they didn't on Ben Sheets. "I think anybody can come back from anything," Bedard said. "I'm going to do my best to come back and that's that."

According to Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times, the Mariners haven't ruled out signing Erik Bedard (shoulder) to a contract extension.
Probably because he's going to come at a discount. Bedard underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum and inflamed bursa. He's expected to miss most of spring training and might not be ready for Opening Day 2010. An extension would allow him to rehab under the watch of team physicians.

Erik Bedard won't resume pitching for another four-to-six months after exploratory surgery on Friday revealed a torn labrum and inflamed bursa.
Bedard could miss the early part of the 2010 season, as he'll need a good amount of rehab to recover from both repairs. He is a free agent this winter, which is sure to make things interesting. Any team that signs him will be assuming a good amount of risk. He may have to settle for a short-term deal.
