Sean's Super Subs - Week 35

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

As promised, I pushed up the GW35 edition of Sean’s Super Subs in order to provide my recommendations ahead of Tuesday’s waiver wire.  Before we get down to business, however, I wanted to give an updated outlook on the pair of forwards I tipped last week. Charlie Austin seems poised for a start when Southampton travel to Leicester City on Thursday, having made substitute cameos in each of the last two matches.  Should Mark Hughes name Austin in the starting XI, then he is someone to use in 10-team leagues. I’m slightly less confident in Danny Welbeck's chances ahead of the first leg of Arsenal's Europa League semi-final, but the lack of serivable forwards dicates holding him in deeper leagues.

GW35 Matches

Tuesday — Brighton vs. Tottenham

Wednesday — Bournemouth vs. Manchester United

Thursday — Leicester City vs. Southampton; Burnley vs. Chelsea

Saturday —  Watford vs. Crystal Palace; West Brom vs. Liverpool

Sunday — Stoke vs. Burnley; Arsenal vs. West Ham; Manchester City vs. Swansea

Monday — Everton vs. Newcastle

As usual, here is a brief guide to maximize my player recommendations.  This column serves the purpose of providing you with weekly free agent/waiver-wire adds for Togga draft leagues. Each week, I research and identify players with the best value available in more than 50 percent of all leagues.  The players selected are then given one of three specific labels. Streaming options are players worth adding for a single gameweek.  These players are best suited for owners dealing with injuries or suspensions. Short-term adds are players worth holding for a specific duration.  In most cases, players are given this label because of a boost in form or increase in playing time. Long-term adds are players worth adding based on potential.  Essentially, this tag is reserved for players with a good shot at becoming a reliable contributor (more risk, more reward).

Defenders

Kevin Long, Burnley (32 percent):  With Ben Mee still sidelined by a shin injury, Long is pretty much a lock to continue at center-back for matches against Chelsea and Stoke City in GW35.  The Republic of Ireland international shined in each of the last two matches, as he provided a goal and an assist on his way to 38 total points. While Long has only seen starts when called on to deputize for either Mee or James Tarkowski this season, his production across those 11 matches is quite remarkable.  Compared to all defenders, the 31-year-old ranks co-second with Ben Davies and Shkodran Mustafi in points per match average (12). Since Burnley are the only club with two matches this week, Long is the top defender to target.

Vincent Kompany, Manchester City (45 percent):  Manchester City wrapped up the Premier League title thanks to West Brom’s win over Manchester United on Sunday.  It is realistic to assume Pep Guardiola will give some youngsters minutes in the final few matches, but the smart money is on him fielding a strong side when they celebrate the title at home against Swansea City this weekend.  With that said, all signs point towards a start for club captain Vincent Kompany. The Belgian international has returned a goal, an assist and an average of 10.35 points over his last five starts. Meanwhile, Swansea have just 11 goals to show from 17 away matches this season. Kompany is a good option for 12-team leagues.

Midfielders

İlkay Gündoğan, Manchester City (49 percent):  Back-to-back goals have brought Gündoğan to the attention of FPL managers in need of a midfielder.  The 28-year-old scored a cracker of a goal in the Manchester derby and converted a penalty in the 3-1 win over Tottenham at the weekend.  Gündoğan’s form makes him a waiver-wire target ahead of Swansea City's trip to the Etihad.  Taking into account the Swans have kept just one clean sheet in their last 15 away matches, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gündoğan get on the scoresheet this weekend.  All things considered, I rate him as one of the best midfielder to stream in GW35.

Jack Cork, Burnley (11 percent):  Burnley is the top team to target this week since they are the only club with two matches.  Aaron Lennon (16 percent) is worth a shout in the streaming conversation, but the ever-present Cork seems a safer bet. Since the defensive midfielder has started all 33 of Burnley's matches this season, he is expected to be in the starting XI for both home fixtures (against Chelsea and Stoke City).  Cork does the majority of his scoring from defensive metrics, as he sits ninth in aerials (52) and co-15th in tackles won (43) in the current midfielder ranks. Despite a less than appealing 5.23 points per match average this season, the Englishman should be able to return double-digit points across 180 minutes in GW35.  If you need a fifth midfielder and play in a deeper leagues, Cork is a sleeper consideration.

Forward

Ayoze Perez, Newcastle (25 percent):  After providing just two goals and four assists in 28 league appearances, Perez has played a hand on each of Newcastle’s five goals during the last three matches.  With goals in three straight games and assists in the last two, only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (62.5) has returned more fantasy points than Perez (61) since GW32.  Firing on all cylinders and readily available across the vast majority of leagues, Perez is the forward I would target on the waiver-wire.  He should be valued as a starting option in 12-team leagues for Newcastle's remaining matches against Everton (A), West Brom (H), West Brom (A) and Chelsea (H).
