Three days in AprilMonday, July 02, 2012
In the last week you may have noticed that this redesign popped up out of nowhere, without announcement. The title is self-explanatory, Rotoworld now features an NFL Draft section and I will be your guide along the way. It is entirely cliche, but I could not be more excited.
Back in January, while in Mobile during Senior Bowl coverage, I attempted a half-hearted pitch to Rotoworld/NBC Sports higher-ups on the possibility of creating year-round draft content. The response of “we’ll see” was all I could have asked for at the time. Fast-forward three months, a dedicated evaluation Google document, an endless amount of fantastic interactions on Twitter, a new love for coffee, and a light bulb going off in Evan Silva’s head that made three months of job pitching a reality in three days, has led us here.
I would like to think that we will bring you an excellent combination of news and opinion with a player evaluation spin, but truthfully it is tough to know for sure. That is where you come in with suggestions, observations, criticisms, etc. The goal is to be as accountable as possible, both in my evaluation process and content creation. My email is always open (and have I mentioned my Twitter account along with the section’s account?).
This site will change over the next few days (weeks, months, years?..), hopefully in ways that improve your experience. We are still coming up with ideas for content, but once summer practices get going we should hit our stride. The plan is to break the year into three seasons (football season, draft season, and the summer pre-season) with specific content suited for each. I already have a feeling we will be learning on the job, in terms of what works and what does not, for quite some time. But that is part of the fun.
I have one goal, to uphold the quality Rotoworld/NBC Sports is known for. Sure, this section is different than others because we will deliver news with an evaluation spin rather than a fantasy one, but hopefully you will embrace that. Coming from a longtime reader, I have enjoyed seeing other sections incorporate evaluation elements like Evan’s Re-Watch pieces and Adam Foster’s MLB Prospects columns. Player evaluation and fantasy sports go hand in hand these days. This also means that the Player News and Headlines portions will be our focus, with articles to supplement as substance.
If you have not clicked around yet, be sure to check out our Rankings. These are my individual player rankings based on my own evaluations and as the year goes on I will be sharing those write-ups as they become more concrete. But keep in mind, I will never rank or evaluate a player I have not watched. It is July, I will get to every prospect in time. We are hoping to offer positional rankings (and not just the basic ones) in the near future. There will be more info in the coming weeks on the kind of long form content we will be producing during each “season”. The intent is to make this section a frequent destination in the rotation of both college football and NFL Draft followers, not just where the venn diagram overlaps.
The process to get to this point has left me feeling very, very fortunate. From my supportive friends and family, my cup of coffee in an NFL Scouting Department during Training Camp in 2010 and inside a team’s War Room during the 2011 Draft, relationships I have built in the football/draft analyst community, to the fantastic people that have helped put this section together in a very short amount of time. Thank you. Of course I am nervous, but that’s a good thing.
