Our Picks: 114th U.S. Open

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

Welcome to Playing the Tips!

Each week this will be the one-stop resource to soak in all the picks from our group of fantasy staffers from Rotoworld.com. We’ll have all of our selections from the GolfChannel.com, Yahoo! Fantasy Golf plus my new expanded feature on my weekly selection for One-and-Done players.

114th U.S. Open

Glass ($14,175,900; Rank: 763)

@MikeGlasscott

One bad nine holes (41) crushed Dustin Johnson’s hopes last week (T24) and Ryan Palmer’s T32 were the only two numbers that hit the board. Luckily, with the exception of Webb Simpson, the four of us were in the same boat. David Toms and Robert Allenby both MC so saying that we were all awful this week, minus Rob, is not hyperbole.

It happens.

It’s time to pick up the pieces and move on to the next one.

Group 1: Phil Mickelson

Group 2: Jim Furyk

Group 3: Billy Horschel

Group 4: Jeff Maggert

ANALYSIS:  After TWO awful weeks in a row, I’m rolling with OLD, AMERICAN dudes this week, minus Mr. Octopus Pants. I have been on the “Mickelson at Pinehurst” train since the day he blew the 54-hole lead at Merion last year. FBI? Who cares! Not me! Claw grip? SHIT, BRO, WHY NOT? Why not break out the Phrakenwood and we’ll have a big ol’ party! I’ll let Furyk par the course to death and hop back into the top 10. Horschel is my wild card. His form has been excellent the last month and there will be absolutely zero pressure or cameras on him unless he wears something crazy Thursday and Friday. I’m looking for him to pop this week. I’m taking Maggert as he, like Furyk and Mickelson, have played eight rounds of U.S. Open golf on and around these greens.

Rob Bolton ($11,403,230; Rank: 6,357)

@RobBoltonGolf

Group 1: Phil Mickelson

Group 2: Dustin Johnson

Group 3: Paul Casey

Group 4: Kevin Kisner

ANALYSIS: After reviving the 2014 season of Webb Simpson in Group 2 last week (T3), Rob picked the right time, unknowingly, to zag away from Ryan, Ned and me as we all rode Palmer in Group 2. Thankfully for the three of us he did NOT win. This week, he joins me with Phaith in Phil. He also matches Ned with Kisner in Group 4.

Ryan O’ Sullivan ($13,773,975; Rank: 1,108)

@RyanGolfBlogger

Group 1: Rory McIlroy

Group 2: Steve Stricker

Group 3: Brendon Todd

Group 4: Billy Hurley III

ANALYSIS: Thankfully, I don’t match a single pick with O this week. No argument with McIlroy in Group 1 as he was my second-rated player this week. The lightly raced Stricker is an interesting angle in a loaded Group 2 and youthful putters are served in both Group 3 and Group 4.

Ned Brown ($15,021,086; Rank: 318)

@Esoxgolf

Group 1: Rory McIlroy

Group 2: Jim Furyk

Group 3: Billy Horschel

Group 4: Kevin Kisner

ANALYSIS: FINALLY a week where Ned and I don’t match ALL of our picks in the GC game! This week we only match two, Groups 2 and 3 but everyone has a piece of Ned this week. Ryan matched him with McIlroy and Rob has Kisner.
