Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Welcome to Playing the Tips!

Each week this will be the one-stop resource to soak in all the picks from our fantasy staffers at Rotoworld.com.

Here is a quick rundown of what sites and formats we will cover each week:

Page 1 will feature all of our selections for GolfChannel.com and Yahoo! Fantasy Golf.
Page 2 will go over One-and-Done as well as Daily Fantasy Golf picks.
Page 3 goes over some European Tour picks for the Fantasy Race to Dubai

Before we look ahead, Mo Yoshimoto takes a look at last week's action in his WM Phoenix Open Recap.

Now for the picks...

Dustin Johnson ($33,300)
Phil Mickelson ($32,800)
Scott Stallings ($9,300)
Brett Coletta ($8,400)
Brandon Hagy ($8,400)
Mark Hubbard ($7,600)

ANALYSIS:  Trying for the Hail Mary with DJ and Lefty at the top. That leaves me with little salary to fill out the final four spots. I went Stallings to get a proven winner that likes playing in California. Hagy is a California guy, so I'm thinking he may fare well here at Pebble. The Hubbard pick is pure narrative as he got engaged on the 18th green at Pebble Beach so this event means a lot to him.

Phil Mickelson ($32,800)
Brandt Snedeker ($32,000)
Jonas Blixt ($11,600)
Brandon Hagy ($8,400)
Nick Watney ($7,000)
Beau Hossler ($6,200)

ANALYSIS:  Ryan has a good mix of course history and California ties in this roster. Mickelson and Snedeker have a combined six wins at this event. Hagy lists Pebble Beach as one of his favorite places to visit.

Justin Rose ($33,200)
Adam Hadwin ($18,900)
J.J. Spaun ($18,200)
Richy Werenski ($11,700)
Jonas Blixt ($11,600)
Stewart Cink ($11,300)
Beau Hossler ($6,200)

ANALYSIS: Rose will likely get overlooked by some of the course horses, making him a great pick at the top. Hadwin and Spaun are both riding a hot hand. Hossler fared well in his first pro start on the PGA TOUR, so why not at this price?

*Make sure you check our Twitter accounts for any updates before the first tee ball flies on Thursday. Change in weather, tee times, etc. can always lead to last-minute changes and we will let you know through our social media channels.

Pebble Beach Pro-Am Strategy: With three courses being used this week and tough weather forecasted for the opening two rounds, it could be important to mix and match what courses your golfers start on. The scoring averages for each course over the last three years is listed below. Ideally, you want to have all your starters playing Monterey Peninsula on each of the first three rounds, but that's not possible given the number of roster spots.

Monterey Peninsula CC: -0.70 Relative to Par
Pebble Beach Golf Links: +0.04 Relative to Par
Spyglass Hill GC: +0.15 Relative to Par

Group A

Dustin Johnson: A two-time winner at this event. He never shys away from tough weather, either.

Patrick Reed: Won his first PGA TOUR event (2013 Wyndham) in sloppy conditions. That always encourages me to go back to the Reed well whenever tough weather is in the forecast.

SUPER SUBS
Jason Day, Shane Lowry

Group B

Jimmy Walker: He's a proven winner in coastal conditions. That includes this event back in 2014.

Phil Mickelson: A four-time champ at the AT&T Pro-Am and playing some superb golf to open the 2016-17 campaign.

Jordan Spieth: Starting on my bench just because of the course horses in front of him. He possessing the winning upside anytime he tees it up.

Matt Kuchar: After the tee times were released, I found out I had three golfers starting at MPCC. Spieth got the short stick since I will never have issues picking him in future events. Instead, Kuchar will slide in as my fourth pick. He has a spotty track record at this event but all of his starts came prior to 2010, when he was still an evolving golfer.

Brandt Snedeker:He's hit-or-miss at this event, collecting two wins (2013, 2015) but nothing inside the top 20 in seven other trips. Worth a shot for that winning bonus potential.

SUPER SUBS
Justin Rose, Webb Simpson, Matt Kuchar, Adam Hadwin

Group C

J.B. Holmes: Led the field in birdies last week, so his scoring is dialed in. As long as he can avoid some of the big numbers, he could be right in the thick of things come Sunday.

Sean O'Hair: Leaning on some course results here. He's 9-for-11 here, including eight top 35s. Playing great golf over the last year, it wouldn't be surprising to grab something inside the top 15.

SUPER SUBS
Jon Rahm, Martin Laird, Matt Jones, Tony Finau
