Tuesday, August 1, 2017

Welcome to Playing the Tips!

Each week this will be the one-stop resource to soak in all the picks from our fantasy staffers at Rotoworld.com.

Here is a quick rundown of what sites and formats we will cover each week:

Page 1 will feature all of our selections for GolfChannel.com and Yahoo! Fantasy Golf.

Page 2 will go over One-and-Done as well as Daily Fantasy Golf picks.

Page 3 will take a look at the European Tour, with the Fantasy Race to Dubai.

Before we look ahead, Mo Yoshimoto takes a look at last week's action in his RBC Canadian Open Recap.

Now for the picks...

Last Week Rank: 128

Rickie Fowler ($31,500)
Paul Casey ($25,200)
Patrick Reed ($17,500)
Thomas Pieters ($15,200)
Zach Johnson ($5,600)
Xander Schauffele ($4,800)

ANALYSIS:  Saving some salary with Xander (form) and ZJ (course history). Pieters and Reed provides a lot of upside from the mid-range while Casey and Fowler provide the reliability at the top.

Dustin Johnson ($33,300)
Sergio Garcia ($33,100)
Bill Haas ($12,400)
Bubba Watson ($9,500)
Kyle Stanley ($7,200)
Bryson DeChambeau ($4,000)

ANALYSIS:  A ball-striking dream team. DJ is the defending champ. Garcia is fresh off saying 'I do' while Bubba Watson is showing signs of form lately. DeChambeau won on an easy course, but he's proven early in his career that tough courses don't intimidate him.

Last Week: 404.0 points

Last Week Rank: 4,526

Jordan Spieth ($33,300)

Brooks Koepka ($31,900)

Marc Leishman ($17,000)

Kyle Stanley ($7,200)

Xander Schauffele ($4,800)

Harold Varner III ($1,900)

ANALYSIS: Keeping it heavy at the top with each of the past two major winners. Loading up on some birdie makers and ball-strikers at the bottom.

*Make sure you check our Twitter accounts for any updates before the first tee ball flies on Thursday. Change in weather, tee times, etc. can always lead to last-minute changes and we will let you know through our social media channels.

This week's Strategy: Not a lot of wind concerns before the weekend but rain is in the forecast. Rain is always tougher to forecast and predict when it will hit. Keep an eye on the forecast, just in case one wave looks a little better. With tee times going off within two hours of each other on split tees, there is much of an edge to be gained.

Group A

Rory McIlroy (6): With plenty of starts in the holster, I will lock and load the big hitter. I'm not too worried about the caddie shakeup.

Rickie Fowler (5): Some of the strongest season-long form. Also has three straight top 10s here at Firestone.

=SUPER SUBS =

Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Patrick Reed, Jason Day

Group B
Justin Rose (4): I am out of Spieth starts, but Rose gets the nod here. The Englishman has five top 5s at Firestone (12 starts), including three of his last five visits.

Paul Casey (2): Seven straight top 30s, playing great golf. That includes a trio of top 10s. I am willing to use one of my remaining Casey starts, even though I'm down to just 2.

Justin Thomas (6): With no cut this week, guys like Thomas gets a nice boost. He is usually one that is boom or bust. If he has an off-round on Thursday or Friday this week, he can make up some of the damage over the weekend.

Hideki Matsuyama (5): One of the top ball-strikers in the world, he's a perfect fit for a ball-strikers heaven like Firestone. It's been a slow introduction with finishes of T21-T12-T37-T42 in his first four looks but I wouldn't get too caught up in that. Course experience is something that has mattered here, but I'm not overly concerned about middling results.

=SUPER SUBS=
Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Bubba Watson

Group C
Jon Rahm (5): Making his course debut but he has shown no trouble adjusting quickly to new courses. He took care of business at another lengthy layout (Torrey Pines).

Henrik Stenson (8): It took him a while to warm up to Firestone but he's racked up three straight top 20s here, including a runner-up finish in 2013.

=SUPER SUBS=
Charl Schwartzel, Zach Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Rafa Cabrera Bello, Brooks Koepka, Daniel Berger
