Shriners Open Preview

Tuesday, October 31, 2017

The PGA TOUR is finally back on American soil after a brief hiatus overseas in Asia.

Golfers in the field will be getting a much-welcomed treat rather than trick this week as the TPC Summerlin plays host to The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Course

Par 71 - 7,255 yards

144 players in the field

The course was designed by Bobby Weed with some redesign help in 1992 by Fuzzy Zoeller. The event was first staged in 1983 but TPC Summerlin joined the course rotation in 1992 and has played the role of solo host since 2008.

This course is not only easy, it plays much shorter than the scorecard reads due to its altitude. This is the Coors Field of the PGA TOUR.

We should expect a birdie fest this week with low scoring all around. Smylie Kaufman shot an infamous come-from-behind 61 to win in 2015, his career low on TOUR at the time, and still stands as his lowest round.

Hitting the large greens will be important this week as well as putting well. There are water hazards on four holes to go with some tough rough but scrambling doesn’t seem to be as weighted as heavily as greens are so easy to hit.

However, I did read that they recently have lengthened the rough making the second shot much harder if you miss the fairways. PGA rookies and first-time winners have been somewhat common here in the past and this week may be more of the same with an abundant of young top-notch talent in the field, all hungry to stake their claim on the PGA TOUR.

Also, there are a few players in this event who have lost their card recently and are looking to get off to a strong start on the year on an easier-than-average course with a less-than-stellar field. Prior to last year, all of the previous five winners were under the age of 30 when they won this event.

Weather
The weather won't be much of a concern this week as the temps are expected to be in the low 50s in the early morning jumping up to the high 70's when the sun is the highest in the sky. There is some wind forecasted to blow 10-20 mph on Thursday so I am definitely going to keep an eye on that. The weekend has some clouds in the forecast but all around it looks to be on the safe side.
