OHL Classic Preview

Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Break out the passports once again as we head to warm and sunny Playa del Carmen, Mexico, for the OHL Classic at Mayakoba hosted by the El Camaleon Golf Club.

This week the field is chock full of underrated talent with plenty of newly-carded rookies looking to make a name for themselves on the PGA TOUR early in the 2017-2018 season.

The Course

El Camaleon Golf Club - Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Par 71 - 6,987 yards

This course opened in 2004 and was designed by the legendary Greg Norman. This course is definitely one of a kind with its original design incorporating three different and distinct looks to the course.

The course features a tropical jungle feel on a part of the course then transforming over to some dense mangroves finally coming out onto the oceanfront for some holes alongside the ocean.

The first hole actually has a ‘cenote’ in the middle of the fairway which is a natural opening in the land that extends down deep into a cave in the earth. The few beautiful oceanfront holes can be especially tricky in windy conditions when the trade winds blow, which is often, so keep an eye on the holes that are near the ocean.

The grass is a Sea Isle Paspalum and should be noted that the greens run about 11 on the stimpmeter. There are a ton of sand traps littered across the course to punish any wayward shots.

Driving distance doesn't seem to play an important role as the past five winners all ranked outside the top 45 in driving distance. This week I want to target golfers who are accurate but more importantly, I want to target players who are lights out with their iron play in the 100-to-150 yard range. A majority of shots will come from this range and I will also target scrambling and players who are putting well.

There are not many other Sea Isle Paspalum courses on tour with TPC Kuala Lumpur and Coco Beach being the other two (CIMB Classic and Puerto Rico Open). We have seen some of the veterans win on this course, as we saw with
Pat Perez last year who had gone seven years without a win on the PGA TOUR until last years win. Finally, the average age for the past 5 winners has averaged 35 years old and I think the trend continues this week as the young guns take a back to the veterans who won't be as handicapped by their lack of length off the tee at this course. It caters more towards accuracy than distance and touch rather than sheer muscle. Finesse trumps all this week.

The Weather

The weather doesn’t look to be a factor at all this week as the temps will be a mild 71 in the morning time while mid-day will see the sun come out and the temps rise to a high of 86 degrees. The wind doesn’t seem to be blowing any harder than 5-10 mph but sometimes when you are directly on the coast, the trade winds have a tendency to kick up and become blustery and a nuisance. There seems to be a slight threat of thunderstorms scattered throughout the weekend which will soften the course a bit and could actually help some players who get on the right side of the weather.
