The RSM Classic Preview

Tuesday, November 14, 2017

Stash your sunglasses and don your warm clothes this week as we head to the East Coast for The RSM Classic at Sea Island Resort on Saint Simons Island, Georgia.

This event was originally staged solely at the Seaside Course but has since become a two-course event in 2015. All players play both the Seaside Course and the Plantation Course over the first two days before switching to the Seaside course for the final two days.

The Weather
Coming from sunny Mexico to the East Coast isn't easy as temps have been on the cool side so far this year.

This week the forecast for Thursday looks to be around 54 degrees in the morning getting up to around 69 in the midday. The winds are forecasted to be very light throughout the tournament. That looks to be the template for the rest of the week, as well, although Sunday looks to be even colder with a high of just 61 degrees.

Winds are looking rather calm for this area, but Sunday may get tough with winds forecasted to pick up to the 15-to-25 mph range on top of the cold temperatures.

Past Winners

2015 Kevin Kisner
2014 Robert Streb

The Courses

Plantation Course

Par 72 - 7,058 yards

This course was designed in 1926 by Water Travis and has been described as a 'parkland along the sea' while playing just shy of 7,100 yards. There is water on ten holes and despite the wide fairways, can play hard if the wind blows. This course plays in direct contrast to the Seaside course.

Seaside Course
Par 70 - 7,055 yards

Originally designed in 1929 as two separate 9-hole courses, they were later converted in 1999 by Tom Fazio and combined into one course. Now a seaside style Bermudagrass course, this course can be dangerous when the wind blows hard and is blustery off the ocean.

Last year the cut line at this event was 5-under so obviously, there are birdies to be had on this course.

As I looked over the past few years, it seems appears that putting is the key stat that all winners ranked highly in, along with accuracy and greens in regulation.

Driving distance seems to be unimportant this week as the past few years worth of winners averaged 34th.

The calm winds will bring out the pin seekers this week but I doubt it will surpass last years minus-5 mark for a cut line.

The 'Locals Only' narrative is always interesting with the Georgia Bulldog Kevin Kisner winning here in 2015 and Chris Kirk in 2013. Chris Kirk grew up in Georgia and claims he's played the Seaside course over a 'hundred times' while Heath Slocum, who also won here in 2010, resides in Georgia too. Unfortunately these days, there are more than two dozen players who live or train at the state of art facility in this area so I think 'locals only' may be a broad term used loosely this week.
