Hero World Challenge Preview

Monday, November 27, 2017

There are 18 golfers set to tee it up in The Bahamas this week, but just one will be drawing headlines regardless of how well he plays.

Tiger Woods is returning to action this week. As usual, the hype has picked up a lot of steam ahead of his return. There is a bit more confidence from analysts this time around, but we have been fooled before. Let's hope he can stay healthy this time.

The Weather

Heading down to sunny Nassau, temperatures look to be steady in the mid 70s this week with only the slightest hint of potential popup showers.

The star of the weather show will be the wind as the current forecast calls for winds in the 14-to-22 mph range throughout the week. The course is considered to be an "inland links-style" course but still it's just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the coastline. The course is mostly unprotected from the winds, so look for golfers who can control their ball flight and/or scramble around the greens to really shine in these windy conditions.

2015 Bubba Watson

The Course

Albany

Par 72 - 7,309 yards

This Ernie Els design is considered to be a desert, links-style track. There is no rough to be found, just sand dunes and fescue if you miss the fairways.

A unique feature of the course is the fact it has FIVE par 5s and FIVE par 3s. The plethora of par 5s means plenty of scoring chances but the abundance of par 3s means plenty of chances for double bogeys, as well.

When describing the course, Els compared it to a mix between Royal Birkdale and Els Club Dubai. He also mentioned that he was inspired by some Australian sandbelt courses like Royal Melbourne.

Wind-Specific Stats
With steady winds in the forecast, I thought would be important (or at least interesting) to see who has fared well in similarly windy conditions.

These stats are provided as a courtesy of fantasynational.com. Looking at the last 24 rounds for each golfer when they played in moderate (or stronger) winds.
