AL Potential Callups

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Oakland - The A's certainly have as many options as any team when it comes to September callups, but they've mostly defied logic in their position player choices so far. Aaron Cunningham, Eric Patterson and Travis Buck have all been jerked around, something that could continue if all three are up next month. Ideally, one or two from the group would get to play regularly. If the A's try to mix in all three with Scott Hairston, Ryan Sweeney and Rajai Davis, then there won't be any fantasy value to be found. … The A's have been using Tommy Everidge at first base, but he's not a legitimate prospect. Daric Barton, Brett Wallace and Chris Carter are. The A's will probably mix and match Everidge and Barton next month. Wallace hasn't excelled since coming over for Matt Holliday, and while Carter has had a terrific season, the A's have kept passing over opportunities to promote him from Double-A to Triple-A. … The A's will likely need a starter or two with Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson potentially getting shut down. Clayton Mortensen and Dana Eveland could get opportunities.

Seattle - First baseman Mike Carp would have ranked high on a list of potential second-half callups a couple of months ago, but he's really struggled since the Mariners called him up, gave him eight at-bats in 17 days and sent him back down. He's now hitting .262/.374/.436 for Triple-A Tacoma. Unless Ken Griffey Jr. gets hurt, Carp probably won't see much time as a backup next month. … A healthy Matt Tuiasosopo would have gotten a chance to fill in for Adrian Beltre twice now, but he's been slow to recover from elbow surgery. He's still likely to be promoted in September, but he'll be lucky to play once a week. … Catcher Adam Moore's chances of receiving playing time would seem to hinge on Rob Johnson's play. Johnson has been a pretty good backstop since the beginning of July, but his bat is sagging again of late. The Mariners do favor Moore for the long term, but he probably won't be viewed as the starter just yet. … The potential pitching callups are all guys we've seen before. Brandon Morrow, who just pitched a shutout for Tacoma, could rejoin the rotation before the end of August. Jason Vargas is another candidate for starts.

Tampa Bay - David Price appears bullpen bound, so Andy Sonnanstine will likely rejoin the rotation next month. Another option would be to turn to top prospect Wade Davis. Sonnanstine should be the choice is he finishes August strong. After six straight quality starts to open his stint at Durham, he gave up six runs last time out, leaving him 4-2 with a 4.30 ERA. Assuming that he's picked, he'll be worth using in AL-only leagues. … Matt Joyce will definitely be recalled, but if the Rays wanted him in the right-field mix, they'd have him up right now. His production has waned as the year has gone on, so little should be expected. … If top prospect Desmond Jennings is promoted, it will likely be to act as a pinch-runner. … Shortstop Reid Brignac was called up Saturday. He'll likely be demoted in a couple of days and then recalled again on Sept. 1.

Texas - We'll surely see Chris Davis back in September, but it's still too early to tell if he'll have a meaningful roll. He's hitting .328/.418/.550 in 35 games since being sent down, but that hasn't convinced the Rangers to give him another chance. It will probably be next year before he's again worth using. … Top prospect Justin Smoak probably won't be promoted. After posting a 930 OPS in Double-A, he's fallen to .236/.341/.368 in 38 games in Triple-A. … For the outfield, the Rangers are already looking at Julio Borbon and can recall Greg Golson and Brandon Boggs. No fantasy value there, though. … Guillermo Moscoso could be next in line for starts. He's been used in relief in his brief time in the majors, but he's 4-3 with a 1.89 ERA as a starter in Triple-A. He'd be worth trying if added to the rotation. … Luis Mendoza, who threw a no-hitter for Oklahoma City on Friday, will probably be brought up to pitch in relief.

Toronto - Even though there's really no chance of him becoming super-two eligible, Travis Snider still hasn't been called up by the penny-pinching Jays. It should happen by Sept. 1 at the latest, and once it does, he'll have to be in the lineup practically every day. He'll be a mixed-league sleeper. … Brian Dopirak, once considered one of the game's better first base prospects while with the Cubs, could also join the team after hitting .318/.376/.570 between Double- and Triple-A. A Lyle Overbay trade might even make him the starting first baseman for the rest of the season. That's probably what it would take to make him worth using in AL-only leagues. … J.P. Arencibia is hitting a very disappointing .229/.281/.409 for Las Vegas, but he might be brought up to split time with free-agent-to-be Rod Barajas anyway. The Blue Jays badly want him to become their long-term catcher. … David Purcey needs a strong finish to the Triple-A season in order to put himself in position to receive some starts. It'd also help his chances if Shaun Marcum ends up getting shut down. Purcey is 6-5 with a 4.92 ERA and an 87/63 K/BB ratio in 108 IP for Las Vegas. … Zach Stewart, a reliever picked up in the Scott Rolen deal, will likely be added to the pen.
