May Second Baseman Rankings

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Welcome to the May rankings. Players are ranked based on how much value I believe they'll provide in 5x5 leagues over the rest of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll find a fully updated top 250 list.

Second Basemen

Falling off: Eric Young Jr. (No. 28), Blake DeWitt (No. 30), Will Rhymes (No. 34), Luis Castillo (No. 35), Brad Emaus (No. 37), Luis Valbuena (No. 38), David Eckstein (No. 40)

  • A month closer to returning, Utley (knee) should be moving up. Still, there's enough uncertainty regarding his recovery that I'm awfully hesitant to put him above Weeks and Kendrick. Maybe he'll make it back during May, but it doesn't look like there's a timetable yet.

  • Ackley also isn't moving up just yet. At the start of the season, there was good reason to believe he'd arrive in Seattle right around June 1. However, he's off to a poor start at Tacoma (.220/.336/.319), and the Mariners may opt to stick with veterans Jack Wilson and Kennedy in the hopes that they'll have more trade value closer to the deadline.

  • Herrera has been a big success as the Rockies' second baseman, but he's extremely weak in the power categories and, after going 4-for-4 in his first five starts, he's 0-for-2 stealing bases since April 14. For those reasons, I'm still ranking the current hot-corner duo of Lopez and Wigginton ahead of him. Lopez is swinging better lately, though it's not really showing up in the results.
