May Shortstop Rankings

Monday, May 2, 2011

Welcome to the May rankings. Players are ranked based on how much value I believe they'll provide in 5x5 leagues over the rest of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll find a fully updated top 250 list.

Falling off: Ronny Cedeno (No. 35), Elliot Johnson (No. 36), Jason Donald (No. 39), Everth Cabrera (No. 40), Ramon Santiago (No. 42), Geoff Blum (No. 44)

  • I did seriously debate Tulowitzki vs. Hanley, particularly with the way Tulo has fallen off of late. For all of his early success, Tulo is only markedly better than Angel Sanchez in one category (7 HR vs. 1 HR). His fantasy production doesn't stand out elsewhere. I do think there's a pretty decent chance Ramirez will outpoint him the rest of the way. That said, I wouldn't be gutsy enough to trade Tulo for Hanley right now.

  • As for the hugely surprising Sanchez, he could quickly revert to being worthless with Barmes back. The Astros will probably give him some time at second and third for now, but he's due to decline any week now, and since he's not a stolen-base threat, he'll be useless in NL-only leagues once he's down to starting a couple of times per week.

  • While the Rays surely have to be weighing it, I don't think they'll send Brignac down when Longoria returns this week. He's their best defensive option at shortstop, and his bat figures to come around. Even though he went all of April without an extra-base hit, I'm dropping him just three spots.
