May Relief Pitcher Rankings

Monday, May 02, 2011

Welcome to the May rankings. Players are ranked based on how much value I believe they'll provide in 5x5 leagues over the rest of the season. Along with the position rankings, you'll find a fully updated top 250 list.

Relief Pitchers

Falling off: Jake McGee (No. 38), Joaquin Benoit (No. 53), Matt Belisle (No. 58), Takashi Saito (No. 63), Bobby Jenks (No. 64), Bobby Parnell (No. 66), Joba Chamberlain (No. 67), Craig Breslow (No. 68), Octavio Dotel (No. 69), Ryan Perry (No. 70)

  • Broxton drops nine spots, but he's still easily the highest ranked Dodger here. I'm more concerned about the lack of movement than the drop in velocity on his fastball. I doubt it's as simple as a mechanical tweak solving all of his problems, and I'm guessing he'll remain pretty inconsistent over the next several weeks. That said, he's still the team's best bet going forward. Kuo may steal away the job for a little while, but health will remain a major concern there. If Kuo were a better bet to stay healthy, I'd have him 10 spots higher and Broxton a half-dozen spots lower

  • While on the subject of Dodger relievers, I'm keeping Jansen in the top 70 even though he was sent down Sunday. Yeah, his command has been off, but nine of the 11 runs he allowed came in two of his 11 appearances. He'll be back.

  • Aardsma (hip) figures to come off the DL towards the end of the week, but it looks like it will be at least an extra 7-10 days before he assumes the closer's role. League is 7-for-7 filling in for him.

  • Feliz (shoulder) will be activated Friday as long as his rehab appearance Wednesday goes as planned.

  • Francisco is looking strong since coming off the DL, and the Blue Jays could turn the closer's role over to him at any time. Rauch has done absolutely nothing wrong, and I still have him as the slightly better bet than Francisco for the season. However, I'm guessing Francisco will start getting some save chances soon.
